One bit of advice for anyone playing football today…

Enjoy every game as if it could be your last.

18 months after injuring my right knee, I find myself in the same situation but this time it’s the other one.

I knew it was bad straight away and despite how it looks in the picture, it was just a freak incident.

A defender trying to defend a cross. A striker trying to get on the end of the same cross.

My leg was in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

One different decision in the game and I would have been walking off that pitch a minute later with a clean sheet and a win.

I couldn’t make these last few years up if I tried.

Thankfully I’ve got great people around me at the club, at work, and most importantly at home, so I’m in a good place at the minute.

Let my situation be a reminder that you never know what’s around the corner, especially in football, so enjoy every moment that you get to do what you love.

If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, then what is the point in doing it?

Money? Status?

Both are things that football can give you but so can many other career paths and neither of those things are as important as loving what you do and playing with a smile on your face.

Can you remember the excitement you had on the morning of a game when you was just a child?

The chances are you don’t get that same feeling now. It is easy to lose that love for it when things aren’t going well, or the pressures build up.

Winning, staying in the team, contracts and life commitments all add pressure to what was once just fun with your mates.

You’ll have to learn to cope with those pressures placed on your shoulders, whilst still trying to enjoy it. That will come with experience.

You will have moments where it’s almost impossible to enjoy because of underperforming, or the results aren’t coming for example but there’s one thing I’ve come to learn throughout my time in the game…

The quicker you can get back to playing with a smile on your face and just enjoying the opportunity you’ve been given, the better you will perform.

Although football is only a short career, it’s a long time wasted if you’re not enjoying it.

Don’t look back on your career and wish you had enjoyed it more.

Aug 2021 vs Aug 2022.

In the first two pictures I was struggling to contract my quad and wondering how that leg would be able to run, jump or kick a ball.

Fast forward (or slow forward) a year and I’m back doing what I love.

Perseverance, good people around me, discipline and faith were key in my recovery but at times I struggled and suffered.

Deep down I always believed that I would play again but I had many moments of doubts.

Setbacks are going to happen, whether it’s in football or life.

In football it can be through injuries, bad form or being out of the team to name a few. The list could go on and on.

I’m not made any different to anyone reading this or someone going through a similar situation but I can say that I managed to overcome it and so can you.

You have to find it within yourself to remain disciplined, to believe in yourself and to get up everyday and work towards that end goal.

No one can instill that drive, discipline and self-belief into you.

I used different motivations to spur me on when things were tough. To prove people wrong was one of them but the biggest was my two sons.

I wanted to show them and others going through similar troubles that although things might not be going to plan, that you can turn that negative situation into a positive one and succeed.

So whenever you are going through a tough period, remember that you will come through it.

It might take almost a year like it did for me but you can NEVER give up or stop believing.

So the season has started and you were either in the team or not.

If you were then that’s great news, you’ve earned that spot in the team through your performances in pre-season.

However, if you found yourself on the bench, in the stand, or left at home I know your frustrations.

Just because you started, it doesn’t mean that spot in the team is now yours.

If you were unable to contribute for whatever reason then don’t lose your head and allow it to affect training this week.

Don’t allow yourself and your teammates to get carried away over a victory. If you lost, pick yourself back up and use this week to improve, so that next week you’re celebrating 3 points instead.

A lot can change in a week. Every training session is a day for you to keep the shirt, or earn your spot in the starting XI.

If you weren't selected you already know you've got work to do to get in the team.

If you were in the team you've also got work to do to stay there.

Whether you won, lost or drew, there will be many things you can improve on as a player and as a team.

So don’t get comfortable because things have started well, or worry because things didn't go to plan.

It's only the start of a 40+ game season.

The real hard work has only just begun! 💪🏽
