POSTS STORIES REELS

After five jam-packed days of screenings from October 21-25, the 39th annual @vafilmfest has finally come to a close. Peter Farrelly’s I PLAY ROCKY was just announced as this year’s Narrative Feature Audience Award winner, and Matthew Syrett and Bowie Alexander’s ADMISSION POSSIBLE won the same prize for Documentary Feature.

While much of my VAFF agenda included rewatches from earlier-in-the-year festivals, I was lucky enough to finally catch up on a handful of films I have been itching to see. Visit the link in bio to check out some of my first reactions to the new titles I screened at this year’s Virginia Film Festival, including ALL OF A SUDDEN, BEHEMOTH!, NINA ROZA, and PAPER TIGER.

MAKING MARIE ANTOINETTE begins its U.S. theatrical release this Friday, October 23, courtesy of @mubi

Timed to the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola’s iconic Marie Antoinette, MAKING MARIE ANTOINETTE was shot by the director’s late mother, Eleanor Coppola, unearthing behind-the-scenes moments from the history-making production while also revealing Eleanor’s innermost reflections on her own creativity and that of her daughter, whose one-of-a-kind cinematic language has gone on to shape an entire generation in the decades since its release.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM begins its U.S. theatrical release this Friday, October 16, courtesy of @neonrated

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM was 50 years in the making. First conceived by William Greaves and completed by his son David and granddaughter Liani, the documentary captures an afternoon with key figures from the Harlem Renaissance as they reflect on one of America’s most significant cultural movements. Richly resonant, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM presents a vital glimpse into the past, looking beyond the most recognizable dignitaries of the Harlem Renaissance to spotlight many of its equally fascinating, if underappreciated, contributors and their groundbreaking ideas.

After touring the film festival circuit last year, BARRIO TRISTE will become available digitally in the United States on Friday, October 9, courtesy of @filmmovement

The feature film debut from STILLZ, best known as Bad Bunny’s creative director, BARRIO TRISTE is inspired by the Medellín neighborhood of the same name, where the director’s family once lived. Working with phantasmagoric imagery and a pounding @arca1000000 score, BARRIO TRISTE feels more like a psychedelic impression than a grounded portrait of the community’s disenchanted youth during one of its most troubling epochs.

The 39th Virginia Film Festival is just around the corner, set for October 21-25, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The festival will screen more than 120 new titles this year, many of which have already distinguished themselves as awards-season frontrunners, including CLUB KID, LA BOLA NEGRA, and WILD HORSE NINE. Arthouse-minded festival-goers will have plenty of under-the-radar movies to see too, like THE BLOOD COUNTESS, starring Isabelle Huppert as the infamous Elizabeth Báthory, or Valeska Grisebach’s Cannes winner THE DREAMED ADVENTURE, recently announced as Bulgaria’s Best International Feature submission for the upcoming Academy Awards. VAFF’s programming explores a diverse range of themes, from Black Excellence to Music on Film to LGBTQIA+, offering unique titles for almost any movie lover.

Tickets for @vafilmfest go on sale Friday, October 2 at noon. Visit the link in our bio to read Foremost Film’s full preview of this year’s festival.

After 11 days and nearly 300 movie premieres from around the globe, the 51st Toronto International Film Festival came to a close on Sunday, September 20. Cannes breakout LA BOLA NEGRA from directing duo Los Javis walked away with the festival’s renowned People’s Choice Award, and Simon Stone’s ELSINORE scored the International People’s Choice Award.

While Foremost Film’s reactions to both of those winners were much more tepid than the famously enthusiastic TIFF audiences, this year’s festival had plenty of new gems to fall in love with, including BUCKING FASTARD, POSSIBLE LOVE, and TENDER LOVING CARE.

KRUX world premiered as part of the Discovery program @tiff_net on Saturday, September 12.

Brimming with palpable paranoia and channeling a deeply unsettling atmosphere to match, German filmmaker Tony Vahl’s feature debut examines one of her homeland’s most disturbing junctures: the dying days of the Second World War. Drawing inspiration from horrifying real-life tales told by the director’s grandmother, who lived through the final breaths of Hitler’s Germany, KRUX is quite impressive in craftsmanship and tone, shining a light on an overlooked consequence of Nazi devastation that never feels trite, particularly amongst the World War II genre, which so often feels uninspired or overworked

Last night, EVERYTHING ELSE IS NOISE made its North American debut in the Wavelengths program @tiff_net

Nicholás Pereda’s newest work makes way for furtive (and funny) social criticism that never feels didactic, instead inviting viewers to focus on the existential plight of its female characters and the poignant nuances they offer.

After world premiering @iffr earlier this year, CHRONOVISOR, the mind-blowing debut feature from Jack Auen and Kevin Walker, hits U.S. theaters this Friday, September 4, courtesy of @ghopperfilm

Simultaneously an atmospheric tribute to dark academia and an unsettling Vatican conspiracy thriller, CHRONOVISOR is a wholly distinctive work that will spice up end-of-summer watchlists and likely become one of 2026’s most bewitching movies. When the dust settles and the movie’s rather disturbing last frame cuts to the credits, its experimental blend of truth and fiction delivers an exhilarating sensation unmatched by any other recent work of cinema.

After becoming a blockbuster success in its native France, Emmanuel Courcol’s THE MARCHING BAND has finally hit U.S. theaters, courtesy of @greenwichentertainment

THE MARCHING BAND stars Benjamin Lavernhe and Pierre Lottin as two long-lost brothers whose relationship blossoms over their shared obsession with music, unfolding as an entertaining and substantial commercial play that feels perfectly approachable for the masses while still packing a punch of mindful authenticity.

GYPSY 83: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT, now playing in NYC and LA, continues its theatrical rollout at theaters across the U.S. this Friday, August 28, courtesy of @alteredinnocence

Just in time to celebrate 25 years since its original release, writer/director Todd Stephens has re-cut and restored his sophomore feature, adding 40 minutes of footage and even more of the 1980s goth bangers that helped the film become a cult queer classic upon its original release. While the film might not shake you to your emotional core, GYPSY 83: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT ultimately finds success through the style and aesthetic language it brings to life, serving as a breezy and mostly entertaining coming-of-age that does stand out among a sea of similar movies that lack the same off-kilter spark.
