Camel Pose — Ustrasana — is one of the most powerful heart-opening backbends in yoga.It stretches the entire front body: chest, shoulders, abdomen, hip flexors, quadriceps, throat, and the deep front line of the body that gets shortened by sitting, stress, screens, driving, and closed posture.But Camel Pose is not just “a backbend.”Done well, it teaches the body how to open without collapsing.Benefits of Camel Pose:• opens the chest and shoulders • stretches the hip flexors and quadriceps • lengthens the abdomen and front body • improves spinal mobility • strengthens the back body • supports better posture • expands breathing capacity • counteracts rounded shoulders and desk posture • increases energy and circulation • stimulates the nervous system • builds confidence in vulnerability • releases tension held in the chest, throat, and hips • creates a feeling of emotional openness • helps develop courage, presence, and trust in the body The key is not to throw the head back or dump into the lower back.Instead:Lift the sternum. Yoga is powerful — but it’s not automatically calming for everyone.For many people, yoga helps reduce stress, regulate the body, and create a sense of safety. But for some anxiety profiles, especially panic-prone or trauma-sensitive nervous systems, certain practices can backfire.Fast-paced flows, intense breathwork, heat, long stillness, or too much inward focus can sometimes amplify hypervigilance instead of reducing it.This is not anti-yoga.It’s anti one-size-fits-all yoga.If a practice makes you feel dizzy, panicked, trapped, emotionally flooded, or disconnected, that’s not weakness. It may be a signal that your nervous system needs a different approach.Gentler, slower, supported practices may be better tolerated.
