Dear followers, Welcome to the Instagram page of our documentary FREELAND. We are Facu(ndo) and Ali(cia), two newbie journalists on a mission to explore life in a ZAD. A „ZAD“ is the French acronym for Zone à Défendre, which refers to places where people use land occupation as a method of environmental protection. In these communities, people come together with a common goal: to resist capitalist projects that lead to ecocide (among other issues) and to defend the land that is planned to be destroyed for the benefit of few and the harm of all. People live together for weeks, months, or even years, often sacrificing comfort and security. They face numerous social challenges, discuss and test new solutions, share skills and knowledge, build connections, break old patterns, form communities, regenerate biodiversity, and much more. Our interest is to understand what defines a ZAD, how these communities organize themselves, and how they tackle everyday challenges such as food- and material sourcing, finances and police brutality. But we also want to explore deeper questions that arise from the coexistence of people with diverse backgrounds, united and pressured by a continuous struggle. How can we live without profiting from what harms others? How can we approach conflicts in non-hierarchical ways? How are fights for justice around the world interconnected? What do these places teach us as a society? What makes them significant? To gain a broader perspective, we are visiting various ongoing projects in different stages of development around France, Germany, and Portugal (with more locations in the planning). We’re speaking with activists, locals, community members, medics, volunteers, scientists, and visionaries. Our aim is to represent diverse points of view and to inspire those, curious about alternative ways of living, systemic change, environmentalism, personal growth and, of course, composting toilets! by @ouvre.feu
