POSTS STORIES REELS

Last chance to see the @ultravioletarchive installation at Wheaton College in the Ctrl+Delete exhibition:
.
Ctrl+Delete explores the persistent threat of censorship in the United States, from historical book bans used to control knowledge and suppress marginalized voices to today’s escalating restrictions—including the removal of books and art from public spaces as well as the June Supreme Court decision (Mahmoud v. Taylor) requiring schools to provide opportunities to opt out of listening learning about books that include LGBTQ+ characters. By tracing these acts of erasure across time, the show reveals how censorship has shaped, and continues to shape, what stories are told and who gets to tell them.
.
Alongside overt bans and challenges, the exhibition also addresses the quieter but equally insidious forces of self-censorship within art and educational institutions, where fear of controversy, loss of funding, or political pressure can limit which narratives are made visible. Central to the exhibition is the UltraViolet Archive, an interactive library which resists silencing by preserving cultural memory and amplifying suppressed voices. Projects like the Minecraft Uncensored Library—a digital platform where banned texts are freely accessible—demonstrate how artists, activists, and technologists are developing inventive strategies to fight suppression. #ultravioletarchive #bannedbooks by @freeman_christina

When your students are so excited about learning that they are cursing, you know something is working. The paper negative process is always shocking, but this week was a new level. “Are you f****** kidding me?” The magic of the darkroom continues and another generation is losing their minds. #papernegative #darkroomphotography @huntercollege by @freeman_christina

I hope someday this project will become irrelevant. Unfortunately book bans have only become more common since 2018 when I first showed the project @queensmuseum . Still visitors often express surprise at the titles that are banned and reflect on how much they were changed as individuals by reading them. Arts and Literature often make people more empathetic and that is threatening to some.

It was announced last week that the cops are now required to attend NJ School Board meetings because of fights over books in school libraries. More on that soon!
I’m proud to show this piece along so many excellent works @zimmerliartmuseum

Thanks to everyone who came out last night to the New Jersey Arts Annual @zimmerliartmuseum

It’s an honor to be selected for this exhibition by @hankwillisthomas and it was an absolute pleasure to meet his mother Deborah Willis, who I described to my friend today as “a very kind genius”.

Thank you to @jw_mccarthy and the whole team at the Zimmerli Art Museum. It’s quite an amazing show organized within an impressively short timeline. Looking forward to spending more time with all of the work! by @freeman_christina
