As we say goodbye to our first volume we’d like to highlight one of our featured writers for July. Meet Victoria Rogers-Rivera, a local writer. Here she talks about the significance of print, their approach on writing, and the importance of good infrastructure.

-What is the story behind your published piece?

Every day, I spend upwards of two hours in traffic getting to and from work. Citizens in Miami-Dade County have been asking for DECADES to expand the metro and create more public transit. Instead, the city chooses to add more lanes to the highways and invest in projects that only add to the congestion - like the infamous arches and stadium (which were supposed to be finished for the 2026 World Cup). This essay was born out of frustration with the infrastructural alienation of Miami’s landscape. Infrastructure shapes behavior. We are isolated by both our vehicles and our digital devices - creating continuous opportunities for cruelty.

-How important is it for you to have your work in print media?

Essential! Print media is not dead! We live in an increasingly digital world - one where images are flattened and served to you on a conveyor belt that fits in your pocket. Print media gives my work objecthood and physical presence. Content is finite and cherished in a thoughtful way - paper and ink are not endless, so printing becomes a careful act of selection.

-What drives your work?

It is essential to be critical about the world, but to do so with compassion and empathy. I have my judgments, and I refuse to pretend like I don’t. If I’m wrong, then that’s the best thing I could ever be. I write when I am in love, and I write when I am in hate. It’s a translation of all I think and all that I am.

-What is something you’d like someone to know about you and your work?

I am a nervous writer, and it pains me deeply to share my work in any way, shape, or form. I am slowly taking the steps to move away from these fears and express myself outwardly rather than hoarding and consuming my own writing. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have my writing published in From Miami, and I am very excited to see how print media will continue to grow, especially by @frommiamipublications

Meet @kayannsflim a photographer and poet

Here Kay-Ann talks about the significance of grief, memory, love, loss, and a sense of belonging that inform their poem “Return” published in From Miami VOL.01

what drives your work?

My work is driven by the desire to understand what remains after people and places have changed, and also to construct new ways of seeing myself and my likeness in the archive. I am often drawn to the tensions within diasporic life: distance and belonging, beauty and grief, departure and return. I am interested in how the past continues to live inside the present, and in the ways ordinary places can carry spiritual and emotional weight

How important is it for you to have your work in print media?

Having my work in print feels deeply meaningful because print gives language a physical life. A poem can be held, folded, saved, passed between people, or discovered years later. As someone whose work is concerned with memory and preservation, I appreciate the permanence and intimacy of the printed page.

What is something you’d like someone to know about you and your work?

I would like readers to know that I approach my work as both a storyteller and a keeper of memory. I was born in Jamaica and raised between Jamaica and the United States, and much of my work grows from that experience of carrying home across distance. Even when my work begins with personal history, I hope it creates space for others to recognize their own experiences of love, loss, migration, and belonging.

What is the story behind your published piece?

Return was written after traveling back to Jamaica for the funeral of my mother. Grief sharpened my awareness of everything around me: the heat, the roads, the smoke, the marketplace, the buildings, and the mountains. I found myself noticing how much had changed and how much remained immediately familiar. by @frommiamipublications

Meet @color_sz a local artist and photographer

Here Liam talks about the mission behind his photography and a little insight on the photo he took featured in From Miami VOL.01

what drives your work?

My work is driven by documentation and history making. I take a lot of inspiration from photojournalists of the early 20th century and their coverage of major historical events

How important is it for you to have your work in print media

By having my work in printed media, it makes the photograph feel complete. Especially being in a newspaper, it makes it way more tangible and real, that anyone can grab the paper and view it.

What is something you’d like someone to know about you and your work?

The construction site that I was on to take that photo is the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and Residence which is projected to be the tallest building in Miami and in Florida with it being 1,049 ft (320 meters). This building was crucial for me to photograph and for me to have records of. I aim to have a large series of photographs documenting all aspects of the workforce here in Florida not just with construction but every line of work.

What is the story behind your published piece?

When I took this photograph the worker in the photo was the only person working on that floor the only thing you could hear was the sound of the nail gun as he was making this wooden square on by @frommiamipublications

Meet @caro_zch an architectural designer based in Miami. Here we asked Carolina a few questions about their work and practice and how it correlates to their featured piece which forms part of a collection called “Bilingual Architecture: A Collection of Miami Urbanisms”

What drives your work?

As an architectural designer, I’m interested in creating work that focuses on the local and ordinary aspects of our built environment that are often left unexplored within traditional architecture practice. My work has previously taken the shape of models, photographs, drawing, and collages. It is ultimately centered on the exploration of the layers that make up a city like Miami.

How important is it for you to have your work in print media?

Since my work is deeply rooted in Miami, having it circulate locally in print feels like the most meaningful way to share it. I believe that print media offers a more tangible and permanent way of interacting with art while also allowing for my work to be shown alongside that of other local artists.

What is something that you’d like someone to know about you and your work?

Something that I’d like to share is my sincere belief that architecture extends beyond the confines of a literal structure and can be used to explore larger conflicts related to space and identity. I see my artistic practice as an extension of my architecture career which allows me to explore cultural narratives related to homemaking and belonging in the United States.

What is the story behind your published piece?

Bilingual Architecture: A Collection of Miami Urbanisms is a drawing and collage project that examines what it means to belong to a place. It investigates the languages, traditions, and objects that people bring with them after they migrate to cities like Miami and begin the work of trying to make a place feel like home. This project was completed as a part of O, Miami’s Greenhouse program and resulted in fifteen preliminary collages and a larger map that captures the things that give Miami suburbs, like the one I grew up in, a specific sense of place. by @frommiamipublications
