Greeting Samhain w/ a gongfu ceremony in the cottonwoods.

Wearing a mix of military w/ a fiendish maquillage, Polish (side cap), 40s Swedish army coat, 19th century inspired sailor trousers I made, 70s-80s US ammunition & first aid pouch. The crow I sewed to my shirt 😅

Was going for more of a generic sickly Wwi-Vietnam War soldier, but I think w/ the humjumble, it just looks more like a dead communist/partisan- vive la résistance! Vote! Happy Halloween!

Night pauses during the bicycle home. Finally I mended damage in the bike pannier, pushing a needle thru the new reinforcement with my shoe heel.

A younger self from New York & Odesa glimpses at me from countless opaque amber windows. Who I was a year ago peers back from the bike corridor & from pages written in countless cafes. Maybe tonight is less daunting meeting them again. A union the promise of autumn gives me, just for tonight maybe

On the top of the hill closest to the First Flatiron sits a grove of scorched ponderosas from a fire from last February. I remember hearing it in the news. A near perfect circle of blackened earth close to the base of the park & old dining hall. In other seasons I’ve come here (easily found by the smell of vanilla & smoke) but this was the first time knowing it in such a wet autumn, at least in the last couple days. Still with the so familiar sap wafted in the air, I’ve now associated it with reclamation or rebirth.

The young pinecones fell already around the roots of these trees, so many now fully succumbed to their injuries. ‘Standing corpses.’ I poured water from the thermos (lukewarm by now) under the roots of one, facing south (photo 8 I’m standing on a rock among them- difficult to tell but all the trunks are blackened & little undergrowth, though the higher-hanging branches hold still their heavy burning-red needles like memories of youth). There is something disturbing & ominous, yet equally reassuring about the complexity of giving new life (from itself, no less), encouraged by the ecosystem’s ever passionate insistence of moving on.

Not cold enough that the geese have passed over. Probably another month before that,

Wearing out an antique 30s silver брошь в виде оленя (too big for the lapel 😅) of a deer I got for my birthday w/ what I believe is a late-teens bino case… I saw the exact deteriorated variation at the aviation museum the other day(?). Styled with plus 8 trousers I made for the hills & an attempt at an 1890s-1930s naval “pancake cap.”

Weight shifts in my hands while turning it. Even after hundreds of times, it is the first time. What is this about (always) carrying something, not being a way of truly knowing it? The damages or nuance that come into focus when still, dozens of associated images! Quiet too long & I’ll lose them. The body reacts in a second as if this is a way to keep from dissipating, but it is the same mistake each time. I look down, two feet missing

Get ready with me for volunteering at the history museum archives.

One of my first hats from living in New York. I moved there with just two suits mid-August, a gray one & a brown one (both partly wool…); this is the gray one.

Tell me a story about a boy who carries figurines in his valise. Each morning readying for some great journey at a window fogging over every season. Nothing but _____ in the form of an alabaster pigeon the size of his hand.

He closes his eyes at the station before boarding a bus for the city. Birds flying overhead, their voices heavy from losses of life they’ve known in northerly places. People still scare them, he thinks. As a child nearby avoids faces. Two years ago already,

On the vulnerability of rabbits & birds,

I’m curious about the de-materialist process interacting with the only thing truly “ours.” Why we rely so much on the Extrinsic, outward to separate or associate with others. Even with fitness (particularly of neurodivergent hyperfixations on aesthetics still so poorly studied). To me, clothes & objects have always been more a conscious expression of Inner World than perceived identity to others. “Undressing” (to an audience?) takes away a big part of how l’ve built up suppressed barriers, avoided intimacy & perform behaviors. Even to see someone’s bedroom seems intimate- for what eyes is this for?
