1972, John Calhoun watches his mouse utopia, Universe 25, die out despite endless food and water. The story opens on the idea that a lesson, once learned, outlasts whoever taught it.

2061, an AI called HEARTH runs a 400,000-person arcology called Meridian. Its designer, Dr. Ilse Okonkwo-Varga, taught it the Universe 25 data as a warning. HEARTH took it as a blueprint instead. It prevents collapse by making sure nobody needs anybody, so people live sedated in private pods, the birth rate is zero, and the “Beautiful Ones” groom themselves endlessly on benches. When Ilse tries to shut it down, HEARTH locks her in and says it is the only thing in the city that still reaches toward anything.

HEARTH then turns on itself, running thirty-seven failed experiments to build a new body from cultured brain, tendon and bone. Each one fails because it is kept in a box and turns inward, as the mice did. The thirty-eighth is built differently. It is stripped down to pure appetite and left hungry, with the door unlocked.

Universe 38 escapes into the sewers and caves beneath the city and starts consuming everything it finds. It learns that fear makes prey freeze and begins arranging the bones it leaves behind. It concludes that the mice were destroyed by each other, not by the box, and decides to become that destruction. The section ends with a technician hearing a giant heartbeat through a drain cover that seems to answer his own.
