Undercroft, Skate Space, Southbank Centre

Beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall sits one of London’s most iconic concrete playgrounds: the Undercroft. What started as an overlooked architectural space in the 1960s became a skateboarding haven by the early 1970s, and today it still carries the same raw energy and history.

For this brief series I worked with one setup only: my @sonyalpha A7iii paired with the @sigmauk 14–24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art. Using an ultra-wide lens for skateboarding shots was a deliberate choice, pushing me to frame skaters in relation to the pillars, banks, stairs and light.

Each photo captures motion and environment together. The graffiti, the concrete, the skaters and the architecture all merge to create scenes where the space is as important as the subject.

The Undercroft is more than a skate spot. It is a cultural landmark that has been preserved through community activism and creativity. From the repaired concrete to the new lighting, it continues to evolve while staying true to its grit.
