MERGING SPECIES - duo version

A dialogue of control and resistance. Two forces in tension, searching, losing, finding each other.

Michelle’s voice, transformed in real time through my gestural electronic interface. Thrilled to announce this new chapter alongside @michellebawden.soprano

About this entity //
I use masks to neutralize myself from human form, a non-gendered entity, where language becomes gesture, understanding the character through sound, and leaving the imagination to the public to interpret its feeling.

These masks are my stage persona.
I am no dancer or intend to be, I interpret this entity and move as the masks guide me to be.

One of my favorite project memories as a student, and probably the one that defines my practice best; the idea that a single concept can be transduced into multiple artistic languages.

TRADUCTIONS was only possible because of the synthesizer ensemble at UDM. Composing for ten Moog Mother-32s felt like writing for an orchestra where I had to define each instrument’s voice in their own sound spectrum and textures.

Morse code felt like the most logical starting point, it’s already a translation. A hidden sentence became the score, one word per chapter, moving from morse code to sound to performance to visual language, until the full phrase reveals itself at the very end, when I step out of the hidden room to join the ensemble on stage.

Eleven performers on stage, me hidden in a parallel room, filmed by multiple cameras. We never saw each other, but we were one. An attentive listening to the present moment, a multitude of communications, all connected simultaneously.

My entity behind mirror masks, detached from human form, searching to understand human language. Every angle in front of multiple live cameras had to be deliberate.

A project I was able to present twice, and probably never again.

Michelle and I met during the production of the classical opera Magic Flute, where she interpreted the Queen of the Night, and I was making the visuals. The first rehearsal I attended, and the first time I heard her sing, I had shivers. From this moment, I knew that one day we would have a project together.

2 years later, we meet again to create MERGING SPECIES. At first, I wanted to compose a performance linked to fashion avant-garde, where we play music live. As the project grew, it became more than what I expected, including dancers, live art, breaking the barrier between stage and audience, truly merging different species together.

And now, in its final form, it transformed into an interactive opera duo, where Michelle’s voice and my curious cyborg entity merge into one score. We created together the story of our persona, intending every gesture, transmitting emotion without words and finding our language between classical and experimental music.

Vendredi 19 juin, 20h
15 $ à 20 $ (Passe 3 soirées à 50 $)

Modulated lyrical singing, living structures, and eclectic collages 🎭

On Friday, June 19, the second night of AV performances at PHI as part of the ELEKTRA Festival.

👺 "MERGING SPECIES" is a performance where gesture, opera vocals, and electronics merge into an evolving composition. Using a sensor-equipped glove, Gabriela Hébert modulates soprano Michelle Bawden’s voice in real time, creating a dialogue of control and resistance between the two artists.

🏚️ Antoine de Schuyter explores a practice where memory and perception recompose in real time. "Structural Drift" immerses the audience in an intimate experience, gradually transforming the artist’s personal images and videos into organic, shifting forms.

👁️ "Blurring Identities" is a new audio-visual performance by Tanya St-Pierre and Philippe-Aubert Gauthier. Drawing from hundreds of paper collages, the piece unfolds in a fragmented, frenetic assembly of rhythms and notes.

Friday, June 19, 8 PM
$15–$20 (3-evening pass: $50)

A look back at THE BLACK COAT in movement at PHOS

An interactive installation where visitors are invited to try on a coat that responds to gesture. Dressing oneself, a universal daily act, here becomes your own musical composition.
