NEMOTA - MUTENESS
PV · 4 November · 6-9 pm

Oleg Prokofiev · Igor Ominin · Meg Shirayama · Eddie McLean Kaye

NEMOTA takes its title from Oleg Prokofiev’s poem I Like the Music of the Spheres, where the word refers to muteness or wordlessness

The exhibition considers what happens when communication moves beyond language: into colour, form, rhythm, movement, material and space

Set within Prokofiev Studio, four distinct practices come together through ideas of construction and composition, where individual elements shift, connect and find their place within the whole

PV · 4 November · 6-9pm
Exhibition · 5-26 November by appointment

Safehouse 1, Peckham

Collaborative work by Gail Corrie and Jo Martin.

The images come from the bathroom and corridor spaces at Safehouse 1, responding directly to the conditions and constraints of those sites.

Having shared a studio for over four years, their practices have developed alongside each other. This has made both the differences and the overlaps between them more defined. There is an ongoing awareness of where one approach meets or resists the other.

Gail’s practice is grounded in surface, accumulation, and material sensitivity. Her work often builds through layering, repetition, and a close attention to texture and residue. Materials are handled in ways that allow time, use, and process to remain visible.

Jo’s practice moves between painting, assemblage, and intervention. It often involves interruption, placement, and reworking existing forms or surfaces. There is an interest in how meaning shifts through small but deliberate actions.

Material is sourced through use, availability, and context rather than fixed intention. Knowledge comes through handling and re-encountering materials over time.

The decision to place hardened paint shapes over Gail’s work is direct, aiming for tension between control and response, addition and disruption.

Activated copper - work in progress.

Making rust as paint: a process of corrosion and crystallisation.

Surfaces are etched and altered over time as reactions continue to accumulate traces, stains and mineral growth. Moments are suspended and held at different stages of transformation.

These rust paintings begin as samples and experiments, transferring onto larger works that remain ongoing. Each surface records its own history of change, holding evidence of both making and decay.
