POSTS STORIES REELS

A first preview of the upcoming exhibition Conversions by Eddy Van Gestel.

Gallery Leclair kindly invites you to Conversions [The Letters], a solo exhibition featuring all new works by Eddy Van Gestel.

Renowned photographer Eddy Van Gestel presents a unique body of work captured in infrared light, revealing a dimension and depth of color beyond our standard view. Created over the course of three years and inspired by famous letters, the series reflects on intimacy, connection, and what it means to be human.
It’s about you and me, it’s about us humans.

We are proud to share this exceptional and intimate collection, an exhibition not to be missed.

——

Emily Dickinson was an influential American poet who lived a deeply private and isolated life. In the spring of 1852, she wrote this letter to Susan Gilbert Dickinson, her sister-in-law and neighbor, with whom she shared an intimate and romantic relationship. Susan Gilbert is widely considered to have been brilliant and was probably the most important muse in Emily Dickinson’s life.

Conversions [The Letters] by Eddy Van Gestel
Solo Exhibition

OPENING

Thursday, 24 September 2026
19:00 – 22:00
/
Sunday, 27 September 2026
14:00 – 17:00

In the presence of the artist
Kloosterstraat 28, 2000 Antwerp

Exhibition: 25.09 — 01.11.2026

RSVP via link in bio or email
info@galleryleclair.com

—

How can a photograph give form to words? What remains when a deeply personal letter outlives its author and continues to resonate across generations?

In Conversions, Belgian photographer Eddy Van Gestel transforms intimate historical correspondence into evocative photographic works that explore the emotional threads connecting us across time. Drawing inspiration from letters written by figures including Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Marilyn Monroe, Napoleon Bonaparte, Kurt Cobain, Holly Butcher and many others, the series examines the universal experiences that define the human condition.

Separated by centuries, cultures and circumstance, these voices speak with remarkable candour about love, grief, longing, loneliness, jealousy, hope and mortality. Rather than illustrating the letters, Van Gestel translates their emotional resonance into carefully constructed images where light, texture and ambiguity become the visual equivalents of language.

The resulting works invite viewers to complete the narrative with their own memories and emotions. Conversions reflects on photography’s ability to transform written language into visual poetry and private emotion into shared experience.

Fovea 221 I 3
Mathijs Siemens

Cotton yarn mounted on panel
Sized 128 x 40 x 10 cm
Unique piece / Sold

In this series named Fovea, Mathijs Siemens found inspiration in the fitting term ‘fovea’ a tiny central zone in the human retina where our vision is at its sharpest. It is responsible for colour perception and our ability to detect the finest details, forming the most precise image of what we see. Through layered, rhythmic compositions, Siemens translates this sharp focal point into a visual play of colour, focus, and depth.

Space [Karen Blixen]
Eddy Van Gestel

‘There must always be one thing that is more important than anything else to a person and I think that for me this is freedom, or space. I cannot and will not live in a situation where I feel
myself incarcerated. Naturally no one can tell how it will go.’

[On 10 April 1931, Karen Blixen – better known as Isak Dinesen, author of Out of Africa – wrote a very candid and touching letter to her younger brother Thomas. The letter is long, but this intense excerpt captures well why she felt so at home in Kenya.]

Size: 113 x 137 cm
Edition of 6 + 2 artist proof

For more information please email info@galleryleclair.com or DM

@eddyvangestelphotography
