Meet Monique @helpmepeasllc! 🌱💚

She’s out here doing the work in LA, helping communities gain access to fresh, healthy fruits and veggies! 🥬🍅

What I love most is that she’s not just growing food, she’s growing knowledge. Learning, getting her hands in the soil, and sharing what she knows so others can grow too!

This is what it’s all about! Growing food, growing community, and growing together. 🌎✊🏽

Okay, so apparently we’ve been letting perfectly good FREE water just run away from us. 😂💧

Let me introduce you to berms and swales.

A swale is basically a shallow ditch dug across the contour of a slope, not down it. And yes, that little detail matters.

Because when it rains, water is like, “Alright, I’m outta here!” 🏃🏾‍♀️💨
It runs downhill, takes some of your good soil with it, and disappears.

A swale is basically like… girl, sit down. We need you here. 😂

It catches that rainwater, slows it down and spreads it across the land so it has time to sink into the soil instead of running off the property.

Then the soil you dug out gets piled on the downhill side of the swale. That mound is called the berm.

And THAT’S where it gets really good. 🌳

You can plant trees, shrubs, flowers and even food on the berm, and their roots get access to all that moisture slowly soaking into the ground.

So the whole idea is:

🌧️ SLOW the water.
💧 SPREAD the water.
🌱 SINK the water.

Not a fancy irrigation system.
Not fighting gravity.
Just reshaping the land a little so nature can do what nature already knows how to do.

This is the stuff that makes me fall in love with growing food all over again.

Because the more I learn, the more I realize… nature already has a system. We just keep interrupting the meeting. 😂🌎🌱 by @gardengurusgrow
