We unfortunately lose valuable members of this punk/hardcore community daily. And it feels wonderful to see the outpouring of sentiments of love, admiration, legacy and gratitude. But let's stop for a moment - there are living heroes among us that need our help. They are not just memories - they are here, they are fighting now. Johnny Stiff – always in the mix, true unsung hero since the late 1970a. When a DIY band gets on stage there is an army of supporters to make it happen. Well, Johnny was an army of ONE and what an army – 1. Organized and booked early shows for Agnostic Front and Warzone and countless other NY punk bands. 2. Booked dozens of CBGB matinees 3. WNYU Crucial Chaos radio host – spreading the gospel of hardcore 4. Did CBGB on-stage security 5. Opened countless NYC spaces that were boarded up since the 70s to bring NY hardcore to life . 6. Booked the infamous 7 Seconds gig at CBGB in 1984 when 7 Seconds didn’t show up as Jewish Defense League was threatening to blow up the show 7. Booked early Black Flag and Youth of Today shows that Jewish Defense League was thankfully fine with. 8. Transported countless bands in his van 9. Always a smile on his face. 10. Had the best sideburns in NYHC – I loved them and it is thanks to him that I still have my sideburns 43 years later and counting…. 11. Did I mention a smile on his face – such an easy going guy…….cancer, .f*cking hell https://gofund.me/ec08e8da8 by @garynyhc
I think if I keep repeating that the NIHILISTICS are the longest continoussly running punk band in the world- eventually it will stick, meanwhile the VARUKERS out of very posh Leamington Spa, UK come pretty close. 1979 and on and on.... Anthony "Rat" Martin is still a handsome front man, at this point wearing very sensible shoes(there's a photo here where a fan bought him lunch and Mr. Rat was very appreciative), the band was cooking; the pit was rather weak as usually the case now a days; the crowd looked good and tattooed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn2_op2Qk6A by @garynyhc
Generacion Suicida is perhaps the most excting new band in existence. Not because their sound is so avant-garde or their ideas are so revolutionary, not because Tony Abarca – the front man looks part Ian Astbury of early Southern Death Cult /part ancient Mayan warrior, not because Kiwi/the drummer’s handling of snare and hi-hat make Marky Ramone turn in his grave(I know the man is not dead, may he live to be a 100 – turn in his bed….better ?), not because Mario Quezada – guitar’s exquisite surfy guitar lines bring to mind anyone from TSOL, JFA to Molchat Doma, not because Elias Jacobo bass arpegios add polyphony to their already cool sound, But because in front of our eyes they are evolving from an average South-Central LA crust-punk band into a dark-wavy-punky-surfy monster…..Between the dozens of current bands riding the BLITZ nostalgia And hundreds of bands drawing inspiration from Joy Division - Generacion Suicida have chosen a path less traveled….where the wind and surf takes them nobody knows – so far so good though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEIkFSVX7jM by @garynyhc
Lots of Unexpected encounters at the Generacion Suicida/Varukers show - lots of current bands not playing this show simply showed up to check out fellow bands - reminded me of the 80s 'scene' - from Josh of Urban Waste, members of Loosey, Danny Diablo, Freddy Alva of Urban Styles, etc, etc.. But this one is really special and completely unexpected. I come outside between the bands to get some of that polluted air we've been experiencing lately. I see a guy intently staring at his phone. As I get closer - he is obviously watching a rather silly but boisterous battle for the third place in the World Cup. We start talking and realize our paths crossed over 30 years ago - he was in the NY PUNK band the SKABS - I loved the SKABS and filmed them several times around town. Very, very cool - here's a video of wonderful, raw and theatrical SKABS from 31 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o-2y3ZdokQ&list=RD8o-2y3ZdokQ&start_radio=1 by @garynyhc

I stopped doing fleas, but it does not mean I stopped taking pictures.... Look at these imposter heirloom tomatoes - lumpy, ribbed, somewhat irregular - the visual screams "Farmer's Market, Yum"; the taste, however confrms that it's cardboard and water.... Oh, these Industry Hybrids by @garynyhc
