POSTS STORIES REELS

Did you miss me?? This month, we’re jumping on the (admittedly correct, for once) bandwagon and reading the gay internet’s current literary fixation, FRUIT FLY by Josh Silver !!

A book that genuinely pulled me out of a hella reading slump, it follows Mallory Maddox, a literary one-hit-wonder who has spent 7 years trying to recreate the success of her fame-inducing debut. That is, until she cracks the perfect marketable formula:

gay + sad = bestseller

Mallory downloads Grindr, an imagination library of inspiration, and meets a young street kid battling addiction named Leo — it’s just the story she’s been looking for. As she mines his experiences for her novel, Leo too begins to see opportunities in exploiting Mallory’s fascination, collapsing the boundaries between observer and participant and threatening to unravel more than just a career.

Told in alternating perspectives, FRUIT FLY is at once a biting satire on contemporary publishing and a genuinely unsettling psychological thriller, refusing to turn addiction or queerness into tasteful literary trauma. Instead, it asks what happens when suffering becomes a commodity, and what people are willing to sacrifice in order to be heard.

Because #ally is not a title given, but earned.

"Virginia Woolf would have loved Grindr."

This month, we're reading Josh Silver's FRUIT FLY, about a washed-up literary darling banking her comeback on the modern formula for a bestseller (gay trauma, ofc) by cannibalising the story of a young addict she meets on Grindr. But exploitation is a two-player game, and he soon realizes there may be just as much to gain from being her muse.
Darkly funny and deeply uncomfortable, @joshsilverauthor interrogates authorship, the commodification of queer suffering, and who ultimately profits from whose pain.

bc I got something I wanna talk about
(like getting hung up on a twink's trauma)

“Frankly, I think we’ve been doing a terrible job at grooming. I mean look at how many straights there still are.”

For Montreal’s #LireQueer Reader Fest, we’re reading Jordan Tannahill’s off-broadway hit PRINCE FAGGOT, which salaciously re-imagines the heir to the British throne gagged and trussed up at a chemsex party (see: title). It’s an erotic fable that fetishizes the royal family to explore power, the bloody legacy of colonialism, and the types of queerness permitted — if at all — within systems of dominance.

Just a light girls trip to the theatre, ya know?
