Christmas tree card! ‘Tis the season and hand-painted Christmas cards are back in my Etsy shop!! Each one is handmade from top to bottom - artisan style! 😆 Check LINK IN BIO!
It’s a combo of watercolour and POSCA pens on ivy green cardstock and lovely thick watercolour paper. Finally finished with a shiny gold seasonal greeting!
Did I use AI to create this?! Not a chance! I just worked my fingers to the bone instead 😉

The Helmet is forged! Yet again, a simple prop for school turns into a craft project that takes way too much of my time! To be fair, making this Spartan helmet for ‘Greek Day’ was pretty smooth from start to finish (I wish all projects were like that!) and I am now the biggest fan of the humble glue gun. Making this prop with PVA would have taken sooo much longer. It’s all cardboard, glue and acrylic paint with some red paint for the Mohawk. Plus the kids loved it 😄👍
Shout out to the YouTube channels of @navodovo and @muchprops for some design ideas and inspiration 🙌

A Portrait in acrylic? A couple of years ago I was asked if I’d paint a portrait for a friend. If you follow me, you know that portrait painting is not my thing but a deal was struck! This commission took me the best part of a year to complete but before you judge me 😆 it was difficult and I suffered with a lot of doubt and uncertainty, leading to extreme procrastination! Portraits aren’t like flowers or landscapes, a likeness is required and this was really difficult for me.
Anyhow, I decided to try a blue ground (for the first time 🙄) and set to work using a grid to get it accurate enough. So after many hours painting, repainting and adjusting I was able to hand it over to its new owner. It was a huge and humbling learning curve and there’s still things I would do differently if I had to do it again but overall I was pleased with how it went.
What do you think?

Ghost face for Halloween! A quick sketch of the masked villain from the Scream franchise, drawn with brush markers, pocketbrush, POSCA and fineline pens. They did some special packaging for the Fanta cans this Halloween and I loved the fact they replaced the iconic white mask with this pumpkin orange one! Drawn quickly for a more expressive approach and all completed in a cafe, waiting for my daughter to finish gymnastics!
Happy Halloween!

Pick N Mix! A random sketchbook page with a whole bunch of unrelated drawings! The Seed sketch was a lovely bit of metal and mosaic sculpture seen at Much Wenlock, Shropshire. The watermelon slice was a digital drawing tutorial on Tayasui Sketches, learning to use layers AND Apple Pencil (fake one! 😉). The bottom three drawings are stain glass panels seen at Mainz Cathedral - just right for painting with the bright colours of @royaltalensuk brush markers with their juicy colours!!
So no theme here, just drawing whatever the mood takes me on the day! What do you prefer: a themed page? Or pick n mix?

When Sepia looks black!? So this drawing is made with the Pentel brushpen in Sepia ink, which actually looks more brown in these photos than in my sketchbook! The waterfall and magical deep pool are at Cwm Nant Col in mid-Wales, sketched out in pencil and then drawn with the wonderful brushpen. The ink around the bottom of the waterfall is double layered, that’s why it looks darker. I know I whinge about this sepia being too dark but it’s such a lovely tool to use; am I being too fussy? Or should sepia be a bit more Raw Sienna than this? 🤷‍♂️😂

Random sketch dump! A page of whatever I felt like drawing at that moment: a coffee cup, pattern knotwork and old lettering 😊
The coffee cup sketch was a test for my sepia brushpen, the knotwork was an attempt at digital drawing and the lettering was watercolour paint and POSCA pen, from the credits of the old Animal Farm cartoon. It’s all a bit muted so I promise the next page will be COLOURFUL!

Sloe, not fast! These beautiful blue sloe berries were perfect for a watercolour sketch. I saw them growing on a blackthorn bush in the summer but only painted them recently. They’ve got that delicate balance of blue and purple, like blueberries, but I’m not sure I quite managed it - one is a bit more purple than the others!
Anyway, it was good to get my first brushpen painting into this new mixed media sketchbook. It handles like thick paper, with hardly any reworking that can be done so I need to be speedy with the blending. That’s good though: it keeps me from being too fiddly and keeps it loose! 🫐

Stone statues! From London to Vienna for these two watercolour and ink sketchbook drawings. The stone angel is from Highgate Cemetery many years ago, drawn with paynes gray and ink pens. The unfinished one is from a graveyard in Vienna, Austria. I was really struck by the emotion of the characters and the pose. I think that’s why it’s unfinished - I’m afraid I won’t be able to capture all that I feel from the scene. I used photo reference for each and as they are decades old, I still have actual photos to work from!

Big Orange Pumpkins! So, our cutters were not quite big enough for coasters but good for hanging decorations. These air dry clay pieces were lots of fun to stamp and paint, in fact I like the stamped side best because it has texture! I printed the backs but got a crash course in the type of inks to use/not use - the ones I used never dried. Acrylic paint pens were handy for the details, metallic edges and outlines 👍
I just need to be more ambitious next time!

The super rich blue of the deep sea! I think I drew these in 2021, using the old Pigment Marker from Winsor & Newton. A slightly controversial marker as I recall, because they weren’t really an alcohol marker but also not really a paint pen? Not sure if they still make them! But my fascination with sea life continued here, with studies of a jellyfish and large pink fish. The jellyfish was fun to do, painting the background all blue first and then drawing the fish on top with the white pen. With the pink fish, I just tried to keep it loose instead of blending it into the ground 😆

Red Autumn Leaf! Having fun crafting with the air dry clay, we made some leaves to hang around the house as decorations. After cutting the shape, I curled the clay on a cup bottom and painted it with sponged acrylic paint. The veins were carved with a simple plastic clay tool and coloured with gold paint pen. After the decoupage coaster, it was good to feel more in control of this one! I definitely want to make some more of these and probably Christmas stuff as well… 🍁
