Nojpetén: The Last Maya Bastion in Guatemala
Discover the fascinating history of Nojpetén, the indomable capital of the Itza Maya built on an island. This imposing fortress became a legendary symbol of resistance, enduring attacks from the Spanish crown for 172 years. Its fall in 1697 marked a tragic milestone in the history of the continent, as it was the last indigenous kingdom in America to be conquered by Europeans.

Shadows in the Sanctuary: Chapter VIII - A Story of Transit and Desire

The eighth chapter of Shadows in the Sanctuary is now available through the link in the biography. This is no ordinary chapter; it’s the turning point you didn’t see coming. From here on, something dark and unknown begins to surface, shifting the very atmosphere of the story. But perhaps the most intriguing part is that in the pages ahead, someone else will take the stage... and revealing their identity won’t be so simple. Stay alert, because what’s coming next may surprise you more than you think. The mystery is about to deepen. Will you dare to keep reading? by @gemmita_giron_oficial

My Grand Return to Letters

In this Interlude, I grant a pause to the series Shadows in the Sanctuary, as one might still the lute before its next movement to hear the echo beneath the vaulted ceiling. I reflect upon a lived experience and upon the fortune — as fragile as it is luminous — of being trans women in San Francisco, a city whose mist offers both refuge and dignity. I now take up pen and ink once more, with the devotion of one returning to her most cherished vocation: to write. I invite you, with the solemnity of cloisters and the delicacy of dawn, to read the new article, now available on Substack. #Interlude #ReturnToLetters by @gemmita_giron_oficial

I can’t imagine what life is like for other trans women in states where laws and policies aim to erase us. Here in the Bay Area, we are fortunate to have spaces of visibility, resistance, and solidarity—but we must not forget that we remain targets of the anti-trans war waged by the current administration. Our fight for rights, dignity, and recognition is urgent and radical. I invite you to read my next article to dive deeper into these reflections and the collective strength that keeps us standing against oppression. by @gemmita_giron_oficial

Memory.
Hope.
And courage.

Centuries ago, when the fire of conquest spread across these lands, there was a people who refused to disappear. In the deep jungles of Petén, the Itzá Maya resistance defended their freedom for nearly two hundred years against the Spanish Empire. While other kingdoms fell, they endured among the rain, the ceiba tree, and sacred stone. They endured hunger. They endured bloodshed. They endured because they understood something the invader would never grasp: a people who preserves its memory is never truly defeated.

And Guatemala learned from them.

It learned to survive even when fear ruled the streets. It learned to speak in whispers when truth was persecuted. It learned to bury its dead without letting dignity die.

But the Guatemalan spirit never disappeared.

It lived in every mother who continued waiting for justice.
In every journalist who wrote despite threats.
In every prosecutor who chose to confront corruption, knowing the price.
It lived in those who were forced into exile without abandoning the dream of one day returning to a different Guatemala.

And now… something begins to awaken.

Because after the longest night, even the sky remembers how to shine again.

Memory returns.
Hope breathes.
And courage rises once more.

Guatemala is ready.

Ready to reclaim its voice.
Ready to look power in the eyes without lowering its head.
Ready to welcome again those who fought for it from afar.

The children of exile will return.
Those who defended the truth will return.
And when they return, they will find a country that still carries wounds… but also fire in its soul.

Because Guatemala never surrendered.

It was only waiting for the moment to be reborn. by @gemmita_giron_oficial

The Album of Terror: When Being Gay Was Grounds for Persecution in Guatemala

For decades, the persecution of gay men, lesbians, and gender-diverse people in Guatemala was not an isolated occurrence but a systematic practice documented by the National Police itself. Historical archives reveal how hundreds of individuals were detained, humiliated, photographed, and criminalized solely because of their sexual orientation or gender expression. In many cases, “homosexuality” was recorded in police files as an aggravating factor or treated as if it were a crime, reflecting the deep institutional discrimination that characterized one of the country’s darkest chapters.

The investigation “The Persecution of Homosexuals and the Police’s Album of Terror” uncovered a photographic archive containing thousands of police records in which labels such as “homosexual,” “subversive,” and “prostitute” were used to justify surveillance, harassment, and repression. Today, these documents stand as powerful evidence of the violence inflicted by the state against LGBTQ+ people and serve as an important reminder of why preserving historical memory is essential to ensuring such abuses are never repeated.
