ICYMI: @sjriverkeeper & @cca_florida were on First Coast News last week with CCA talking about our Vertical Oyster Garden program, an initiative to filter the St Johns River and its tributaries with the power of oysters! We are looking for homeowners willing to hang some of these natural filtration systems on their docks, specifically north of the Arlington River and in tributaries like the Trout & Ribault Rivers. On June 21st we will be hosting a Vertical Oyster Garden creation workshop and need about 30 volunteers, homeowners willing to hang gardens can pick them up between 9am and noon visit our website for more details. #verticaloystergarden #oysters #waterconservation #watekeeper #duuuval #jacksonvilleflorida #jaxfl #firstcoastnews #cityofjax #stjohnsriver #visitflorida #northsidepride #stjohnsriverkeeper #coastalconservation #coastalconservationassociation #livingshorelines by @gene4thepeeps

Crazy Idea - - what if neighborhood-friendly community and market gardens were permissible by right in Jacksonville? - What if they didn't need a political favor to operate? - What if they didn't have to look over their shoulder lest 'that one neighbor' make a frivolous complaint to code enforcement? - What if they didn't have to live in legal limbo but, instead, could grow boldly (& legally) in the sunshine with and for their neighbors as proud, contributing members of our communities? - What if proposed ordinance 226-0807 was amended to allow more "community access days," so that our food and green space access to market gardens is not choked down to 12 per year? - What if cross sales are permitted so that growers can mutually support one another by offering honey and pickles and the like from other compliant growers thereby offering greater choice to our neighbors? - What if we get this bill adequately amended and passed before year end, so we can grow on with our lives? - What if we can refocus the creativity and effort of our community and market gardeners into growing groceries with and for their neighbors rather than wrestling with city hall? - - In times when the mainline food system is under increasing threat of disruption and contamination, let's grow together, so neighbors can feed neighbors. - What if we were allowed to go back to basics to ensure our communities can eat well come what may? - PS we have a template, a council member look up along with contact info. If you'd like these tools, comment or DM me. . . . #freetogardenact #wegrowtogether #dondraper #cityofjax #letsgetitdon by @gene4thepeeps
Trey Ford, City Council Public Comment 10/13/2027 - - "Thank you. Trey Ford. My address is on file, but I do live in the Grand Park Agricultural District. I'm here representing Duval Soil and Water Conservation District in support of Ordinance 2026-0807, which is the ordinance formerly known as the Free to Garden Act. Now it's called the Pathways to Urban Agriculture, but I'm seeing some blockades in these pathways. - One of them is, the bill does not give market gardens 70 open days a year, it caps them at 12 public sales days per calendar year. The 12-day number was carried over anchoring market days to the city's garage sale limit. That's the problem. A garage sale is the wrong benchmark for a farm. A garage sale moves old furniture and non-perishable wares, whereas a farmer is selling food that's ripe, perishable, and in-season right now. When the harvest comes in, it has no time to move, so it has to move right away. So you can't tell a tomato to wait for your allotted day to sell. - It gets tighter still under subsection 14, educational and community activities. Workshops, student farm days, garden tours, those count against those same 12 days. So a grower teaching kids in an after-school program can exhaust their entire year just before holding a single market. - So I'm asking that you strengthen the ordinance before it's final, raise the limit from 12 days to 70 days benchmark to actually how food grows, um and not to garage sales. Also allow our growers to cross-sell agricultural and value-added products, which will strengthen the collaboration between urban farmers in a business that is already low margin. Let's pass an ordinance that doesn't just permit urban agriculture, but lets it thrive. Thank you." . . . #urbanagriculture #freetogrdenact #economicdevelopment #cityofjax #floridafishpepperco by @gene4thepeeps

60+ neighbors. One room. One question: who gets the shade? 🌳 That’s a wrap on Florida Climate Week 2026! Our grand finale at The Jessie brought together more than 60 guests for a screening of City in a Forest and a real conversation about urban forestry right here in Jacksonville. Trees cool our streets, soak up stormwater, and protect our rivers. But not every neighborhood has the same canopy. That’s the conversation we had, and it’s not finished. 🎬 Krystle, the filmmaker behind City in a Forest 🌿 Greenscape of Jacksonville 🏙️ Groundwork Jacksonville 🎶 King Travelight, scoring the night with live music 🎤 Moderated by Eugene “Trey” Ford III Huge thanks to the Winston Family Foundation and Project One Health for sponsoring the venue and making this night possible. 💚 Want to keep the momentum going? Follow and visit the pages of the organizations that hosted this event. That’s where the next tree planting, cleanup, and conversation will show up first. 👇 @greenscapeofjax @groundworkjax @projectonehealthjax @volofoundation @sjriverkeeper @thejessiejax @ashantaegreen Drop a 🌳 if you were in the room, and tag someone who needs to see this. 🎥 : @april.visuals #FloridaClimateWeek #blackfilmsmatter #UrbanForestry #JacksonvilleFL #DuvalCounty by @gene4thepeeps
This Vertical Oyster Garden or “VOG” has been on the @msri_ju dock since about June. I installed it with the Next Wave Leadership Academy during the summer and it already has hundreds of new oyster spat recruited. An adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day, primarily nutrients that can cause algae blooms which can be harmful to other marine life. What it does not filter (at least not to my knowledge) is fecal bacteria or harmful metals that are being introduced to the water primarily by humans (certain companies or lack of solutions to problems like old sewage lines and septic tank failures). Over the next few weeks and months we will be disseminating water quality assessment findings and jumping into the most shovel ready next steps. I will make those findings and next steps public through this page and hosting some meetings on the northside to put a focus on the Ribault River and Moncrief creek. Stay tuned. #RiverViews #oysterrestoration #jacksonvilleuniversity #stjohnsriver #duvalcounty by @gene4thepeeps

There are over 25 FREE interactive events for Florida Climate Week in Jax, & we picked 5 to help you start.  My suggestion is meeting us on Monday at 11:30am for the eARTh Inspired Gallery opening inside the @TheJessieJax, where you’ll be able to get information for all the other events on-site. (@CafecitoJax will be providing the coffee this morning!) This is Jacksonville’s 2nd year participating and within one year, they went from 9 events to over 25, thanks to the @VoloFoundation! The teams behind the scenes spent an incredible amount of time creating these experiences for us & inviting us into the work that truly impacts us all. The events range from a @FarmeryJax kids climate cooking class to a @TheScienceSis Climate Experience - & some of the events are already at max capacity in registration! *Link for the events in the bio The cover image is by @DonJPEG, which will be on display at the eARTh Gallery.
