How did jazz inform 20th century ballet? Explore this Jazz Age story as jazz swept down from the Harlem Renaissance to inform new bodies and stages on Monday November 23 at 6pm with the Balanchine Foundation at the New York Public Library of Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. Marina Harss will lead us into this exciting territory with dancer and choreographer @dewittflemingjr illuminating jazz dance, New York City Ballet dancers @emilykikta and @peteraltubewalker supplying its balletic counterpart. I will fill the historical intersection of the two Mr. B—George Balanchine and jazz choreographer Buddy Bradley. We are all looking forward to sharing this story which has fundamentally altered how ballet now responds to music. And we would love to have you with us! Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance . The George Balanchine Foundation’s publication “IN BALANCHINE’S STEPS” gives us a glimpse into the rehearsals of some of Balanchine’s most famous ballets! ✨The book features intimate photographs by Brian Rushton and Costas of Balanchine’s original dancers coaching the dancers of today’s leading companies: including the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Dance Theatre of Harlem—among many others! In addition to the wonderful photography, interviews and commentary from the the photographed dancers are included ❤️ If you didn’t know, these photographs are from The George Balanchine Foundation’s “Interpreters Archive”. This amazing resource preserves videos like these. I watch them through Alexander Street Video, which can be accessed with a library card. I can’t attest if this works for every library, but it’s definitely worth a shot! You can purchase this book on Amazon! I have its link in my bio 😊 Post Features: 1-4. “Daivdsbündlertänze” • Karin von Aroldingen coaching Jennifer Ringer and Charles Askegard • Karin von Aroldingen dancing with Adam Lüders 5-9. “Apollo” • Jacques d’Amboise coaching Robbie Fairchild • Suki Schorer and Francia Russell coaching Robbie Fairchild, Isabella LaFrenière, Devon Teuscher, and Chloe Misseldine • Jacques d’Damboise dancing with Suzanne Farrell, Gloria Gorgin, and Patricia Neary 10-11. “Firebird” • Maria Tallchief coaching Heléne Alexopoulos • Maria Tallchief dancing with Michael Maule 12-18. “Der Rosenkavalier” • Stephanie Saland coaching Miriam Miller and Russell Janzen • Suzanne Farrell dancing with Adam Lüders 📘 “In Balanchine’s Steps” • Black and White photos by Brian Rushton • Color photos by Costas Photos courtesy of @georgebalanchinefoundation and @kylefromanphoto Daivdsbündlertänze, Apollo, Firebird, Der Rosenkavalier Choreography by George Balanchine © The George Balanchine Trust —•—•— I do not own this material. Thank you @georgebalanchinefoundation for the honor of learning Mr. Balanchine’s original 1933 production of “Mozartiana” from the one & only Freddie Franklin! And with @nikolajhubbe!!! That afternoon, many years ago, remains a treasured memory 😍 Having had the additional gift of dancing Mr Balanchine’s final production of “Mozartiana” from 1981, this was indeed a very special experience. And thank you @kylefromanphoto for being featured on the back cover!☺️😉🙏🏻 by @georgebalanchinefoundation

Over the years I have participated in coaching sessions curated by the @georgebalanchinefoundation . Those special days are still some of my most beautiful memories of being a dancer with NYCB. Working with the incredible Violette and JP on Sonatine, Patty on Midsummer, and Adam @adam.luders.danse on David's. I always felt encouraged, believed in and supported for the artist I was, and always left feeling alive and filled with inspiration. To compile many of these incredible moments, a book called In Balanchine's Steps was made! Check it out!
