![Housing, Dining and Conference Services at San Francisco State University are moving forward with plans to welcome first-year students back to one of the shuttered Mary’s complexes, Mary Ward Hall, next spring, Associate Vice President of HDCS Jeny Patiño announced at the Oct. 22 University Budget Committee.
The two 66-year-old dormitories have been closed during regular academic sessions since 2024, the same year the West Grove Commons first-year housing community finished construction.
According to Patiño, reopening Mary Ward Hall at half-capacity next spring meets the increasing demand for affordable on-campus housing, currently 99.3% occupancy across all six student housing communities.
“We only have about 30 beds going into spring, and we typically get about 200 to 400 applications depending on how enrollment looks,” Patiño said. “Prices are going up…that’s also a driver for students to continue to live with us, because you’re not finding affordability out in the city. Opening up [Mary Ward] was important to ensure that we can offer students a more affordable price point.”
