Headland is proud to present Gina Butson and her short story 'Her Entire Sense of the World' in Issue 25!

"The new colour bubbled up through the sea at dusk on a Sunday. It was like the aurora, if all the tints and tinges were mixed together. Of all known colours, it was closest to deep, opalescent purple—yet nothing like purple. It was a bit like the ocean, but completely different from blue or green." 'Her Entire Sense of the World' by Gina Butson.

Gina Butson lives in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. She completed an MA in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters in 2023. Her debut novel, The Stars are a Million Glittering Worlds, was published by Allen & Unwin Aotearoa NZ in 2025.

I was so thrilled to see this in Canvas in the Weekend Herald. I get so many glowing comments about this wonderful cover so it is great to see the work of the talented @sandyc_gogo recognised in this way. Thank you NZ Booklovers Awards. Thanks to everyone who has made this another great week in Ōtepoti. Originally my residency was meant to be 4 weeks, but I’ve been lucky enough to be able to stitch on a bit more time. I feel so lucky and grateful to have this time at the Robert Lord Writers Cottage. I feel very happy in Ōtepoti | Dunedin. I am writing, but admit that it’s been a bit slow to flow. But a good friend reminded me this week “you don’t need to write to be getting inspired” - and I’m certainly inspired here. by @headland_journal
