One year ago today I took a leap. I decided to say no to the industry I'd known for the past decade n change and yes to the unknown. I bet on women's sports and I bet on myself.

What followed: 3 Pride parades, 2 nattys and 1 woman with an iPhone and a dream. A lot of late nights and early mornings. Many tears. More doubts. Worries about bills and skills and whether or not I was good enough to even set foot in the arenas I'd been called into.

What remained: new friends, new colleagues and new opportunities to use my voice. Childhood idols that became interview subjects and eventually mentors and friends. A space to be myself, unapologetically. A place that felt like home. A renewed sense of purpose. And new goals to chase with reckless abandon.

Thank you to the athletes who shared your stories with me. Thank you to the brands and sponsors who took a chance on me. Thank you to everyone who believed and didn't let me give up on myself even when I really wanted to.

Juneteenth 2020 / Riverside, CA
Thousands of community members of all races, size, shapes and backgrounds turned out and turned up at Fairmount Park in #RiversideCA for an afternoon of soulful music, food and conversation.
The energy here was something out of a movie. Smiles cracked through tears, bbq smoke obscured lines of class and color and drinks spilled over into action and activism. "It's a vibe," one organizer said. "We're here to bring the community together. Whatever it takes." From Creole to Caribbean faire and horchata to frozen cocktails, patrons left with hearts and bellies full. "We needed this," one participant said. "After the last few weeks, we've been holding our breath. It felt like today we got to exhale. We've come a long way, but we've still got a long way to go. Juneteenth 2020 / Highland, CA
@nextgenunited celebrated #Juneteenth and rallied the youth over pizza, sidewalk chalk and powerful testimony. Six-year-old activist @ayden_elijiah shared his experiences with racism in his elementary school class and how through understanding and love, he taught his classmate-- now friend-- a better way. "I don't want my friends experiencing what I see on tv," Ayden said after the march.
Organizers said they aim to carry the momentum from #Juneteenth2020 through #Election2020. The event featured petitions and voter registration tables to get youth more involved in the political process and reform efforts.
