1) Ember. One of the first songs written. Branwell burned out, figuratively and literally. The best harmony in the show, coached to perfection by @utonevan ♥️ the final time the girls sing as a unit. The first funeral. Musically, it’s most-overtly linked to the influences for the sisters as a musical unit (folk-rooted female vocal groups and sister bands: Joseph, Haim, The Wailin’ Jennys, etc etc) 2) No Coward Soul. The first song I finished, because it was the only lyric I didn’t write. Written and notated in completion in a Forge Fuel session in 2020, (thank you @forge_nyc) so very isolated during pandemic. Emily, the eternal enigma, needed to speak in her own voice. This is one of the last poems she wrote, and her representative band instrument (cello — she’s also the bassist, this is purposeful) accompanies her like her dog Keeper, like it does in Among the Heather 3) Good for You. One of my favorite, most personal lyrics: “Pillage the places that we built together.” Take Glass Town apart. Rewrite it. Reform it. Make it yours. We’re a part of whatever becomes of it, because we formed its foundations with you. 4) Consolation. Kind of a meta self-dig. Why are we excited by others’ grief? Why are you so interested in my pain? Why did I want to write this story in music for the stage? Bc I relate to it. Because I’m still alive and have to share to feel human. But here I am, on a stage (in a cage), recreating someone else’s trauma for our collective entertainment. And our collective experience of grief. “But all I have and all I’ve made/Can never give me the love I crave” may as well be a personal motto, fml 5) “Our Lady of Grief” is the title of a drawing Bran made. This song is the one that rings in my head most frequently. “I think I’ll just go to sleep …” by @glasstownmusical
1) Forever Known. Final night this was a primal scream, barely singing 😂😭 the Hit Single, so to speak. No one except me, maybe, will ever understand why that’s so important or why its placement in the show is so significant. 2) Finding a moment in Abbreviated to show off Alex, our tireless, cheerful, fierce as fuck MD (and the key change! The emotional high point of the show fr fr) 3) Among the Heather. One of the most beautiful things I’ll ever write, and my biggest (?) challenge on keys, a song I had to fucking drill, largely bc of its 700,000 key changes 🙃 4) Villain/Victim. The OTHER song I needed to drill. One of my most poetic and deep lyrics, Eddy smashed his insanely hard counterpoint, I still don’t know how I wrote/learned/performed this. Why did I write this in 7/4? YOU TELL ME (grief. is always the answer.) 5) Eddy turning Ain’t Got the Time into a 7-minute jam every night. Blossoming into a natural comedian before our eyes. Flirting with the audience, Mambo No 5 references?! shouting out the entire crew 🥹 and then bringing the house down every single night with the actual song. by @glasstownmusical
some favorite lyrics/harmonies: 1) Breathe — so much layering happening at the end of this song, but “give it your life and face your death” is a gut punch at the top of the show 2) Gondal — one of the dreamiest little lyrics I’ll ever write. 3) Always/Never — the sister harmonies are always incredible, but this is the first time they come together as a trio and really shine. 4) Little Deaths — the whollle blues breakdown, plus my favorite harmony to sing 5) All We Have Lost — I’m eternally proud of this entire lyric, but the siblings encouraging Charlotte (both personally and artistically) in this moment is one of my proudest. by @glasstownmusical
