№ 025 · October 31. A half-burned tealight sits in its dented tin cup inside a carved crab-apple at the mouth of the root-hall. Those who stayed behind have kept it lit every night since the bell rang. On the mistiest night of the year, they say, a light at the door is how a traveler knows he is still expected.

The ledger calls for testimony. A bell rang once at first light. A cord is gone from its peg. Every stone on the path out is marked, all pointing the same way. Who would go, and what could be worth it? Leave your guess for the ledger. by @gleanwild

№ 024 · Recovered on the flat stone path beyond the root-hall: one orange crayon stub, its wrapper loosened by damp. Each stone bears a small careful mark, bright as maple fire, every one pointing the same way, out under the bracken and on. Whoever drew them meant to leave in a hurry, but not so much of a hurry as to lose the way home.

№ 023 · Entered at first light: a small brass bell above a root-hall door, tied to the bramble arch with red thread. Its rim is worn bright on one side from years of comings home. This morning it rang once, early, and nobody answered it from outside. A traveler's cord is missing from its peg.

№ 004 · Bramwell Redbutton Holds the Crossing. He was not appointed to the flooded crossing. He simply arrived first, planted his paws among the cold stones, and raised the old red button when the water began to shove. By dusk, every shrewling, beetle-carrier, and field mouse had passed safely behind him. Bramwell stays a little longer, in case the rain has forgotten someone.

The stones set back in place, the tally kept day by day: this is who has been keeping Rainford Crossing all along. The ledger's second character portrait. His print joins the shop soon. The waitlist at gleanwild.com hears everything first.

№ 022 · Entered from testimony: at first light, and again at last light, something small crosses the ford to tend it. A stone gets nudged back into its worn place, and a fresh notch appears on the tally. No traveler has ever caught more than the sound of water settling, and a shape already gone. By the time anyone looks twice, only the proof remains, and the water runs calmer than it has any right to, after rain.

The ledger has started leaving a dry crust at the crossing's edge, just in case. Whatever keeps this crossing has never once asked to be thanked.

Four entries, one crossing. A coin left on the footbridge. A button turned up in the leaf litter upstream. Stones nudged back into place after the flood. A tally stick counting something, day by day. The ledger has started to notice a pattern. Who keeps this crossing?

№ 021 · Rainford Crossing, late September: a short tally stick stands in the mud where the floodwater runs brown behind it. Fresh cuts climb its length in a careful row, one for each safe crossing counted. Oak leaves and acorns gather at its foot. It leans a little, set back in place this morning.

№ 020 · At Rainford Crossing, the acornfall water runs high and brown, yet the grey stones still keep their tidy line. Each top is worn smooth by small crossings and weather. One near the bank sits slightly crooked, newly nudged back after the rain. The keeper left no print, only passage made possible again.

№ 019 · Logged in late September, after the first hard scatter of acorns. A bent silver paper clip was found gripping two oak roots, with curled leaves tucked beneath it like a patched roof. No owner was seen. By morning, the wind had passed over it, and the dry place underneath remained dry.

№ 018 · Found rim-up beneath the hazel, the red cap caught the first cold rain of acornfall. By morning it held a bright, trembling cupful, leaf-specked and sound. The ledger marks it as a small roof for thirst, proof that even a castaway thing may keep watch.

№ 017 · Found at the first acornfall, an open brass safety pin held three oak leaves together against the rain. By morning the hollow beneath was dry, though no pawprints remained to claim it. The ledger marks it as small providence: a dangerous thing made briefly gentle by weather, weight, and need.
