👏This @probonoweekuk, we'd like to highlight the impact our curricular legal clinics have on our students. Our four-year LLB students are eligible to apply to participate in our 3 law clinics as part of their third or fourth year curricula: 1️⃣ Racial Justice Clinic 2️⃣ Housing & Homelessness Law Clinic 3️⃣ Emma Ritch Law Clinic Students are taught the substantive law around sexual violence, housing & homelessness, or immigration, before supporting real clients and contributing to live legal cases under close supervision. 🔆 This experiential learning allows students to develop the legal knowledge and professional skills, but also empathy and ethical judgement required to become responsible lawyers and agents of social change. #WeDoProBono by @gojusticeuofg
🥐 Thanks to all 17 students who joined us for the @probonoweekuk GO Justice Breakfast Club today! ☕ We spoke with students from across the four-year LLB, Accelerated LLB, Diploma, and LLM programmes, as well as several exchange students keen to learn about how Pro Bono operates in Scotland and the UK more broadly. Students shared their interests and career ambitions, and we chatted about our external volunteering placements at local charities and advice centres (such as @citizensadvicescot, @mojoscotland, Castlemilk Law Centre), our legal clinics, and extra-curricular social justice projects at the University of Glasgow. ⭐ A massive thanks to Gemma from @uofgprobonosociety who spoke to students about their student-led society, the events they run, and how to get involved. 📅 We look forward to the next GO Justice Breakfast Club on Tues 17th November, 9.30-11am at No.8 Professors Square by @gojusticeuofg

👏 We're getting ready for @probonoweekuk which kicks off this Monday! ❓ What is Pro Bono anyway? As the UK Pro Bono Week website explains: “Pro bono” refers to when volunteer lawyers provide legal advice or representation free of charge to those unable to afford it. Whilst pro bono legal services are not, nor can they ever be, a substitute for a properly funded system of legal aid, pro bono lawyering provides access to justice for some of the most disadvantaged people, charities and community groups. 🔎 Explore the UK-wide events calendar via probonoweek.org.uk #WeDoProBono 🔍 Look out for local events organised by GO Justice and @uofgprobonosociety by @gojusticeuofg
This week, GO Justice welcomed Diploma students to the first session of our Lawyering for Children project, exploring what it really means to represent and advocate for child clients. 🧮 This project aims to equip future lawyers with the knowledge, skills and values required to ensure children’s rights are respected, protected and heard in decisions that affect them. Together, we discussed: 💡 Why children need access to lawyers The barriers many face in accessing justice 👂 The unique role of Scotland's Children’s Hearings System ✔ Child-centred, trauma-informed and rights-based approaches to legal practice 🗣 Communication, trust-building and meaningful participation when working with children 👨‍👦 The ethical challenges that can arise when balancing a child’s instructions, confidentiality and safeguarding responsibilities. We also ran an interactive 'Child in the Centre' exercise, which encouraged students to reflect on the complicated web of professionals involved in a child's life and the importance of helping children understand who their lawyer is, why they are there, and how they can support them. We're looking forward to our upcoming Children's Hearings role-play session with SCRA @scotchildreporter by @gojusticeuofg
