A glimpse at what a day in my studio looks like.

I tend to jump from painting to painting, especially when I have a color mixed and don’t want any of that paint to go to waste. It’s a good way to keep things moving, not get too stuck in one area of a painting, and not constantly be waiting around for paint to dry.

When I mix a lot of paint for a larger painting, I try to use the extra rather than let it go to waste. You’ve probably seen me painting on large sheets of paper, but I also keep small canvases around for the same reason.

They’re easy to work on between bigger paintings, and there’s no pressure to make them into anything specific. This way, I can experiment with the leftover colors, play around with shapes, and see what happens.

A quick glimpse at day two of my Working Big, Working Bold four-day workshop.

These workshops are always a great time, and I love seeing what everyone creates over the course of a few days. It’s great to watch people push themselves and try things they might not normally do in their own studios.

My next Working Big, Working Bold workshop will be in March. Keep an eye out for the dates when I announce them because these workshops tend to fill up fast.

Going slow and getting into some of the details on this large painting.

I’m trying to get away from relying on a straightedge so I can loosen things up a bit, but for some of the smaller shapes, I still like using it to get at least one or two really clean edges. From there, I can work more freely with the rest of the shape.

More to come on this.

This is why I do it.

One of the strange things about being an artist is that once a painting leaves the studio, I often have no idea where it goes. When work sells through a gallery, I may never meet the people who live with it. I don’t see where it hangs, or know what kind of life happens around it.

Recently, a collector sent me photos of one of my large paintings hanging in the center of their home. She told me that her almost six-year-old son, who is on the autism spectrum and loves art, has become fascinated by the painting.

One morning, during a difficult moment, he began looking at the painting. His mom showed him videos of me working in the studio. He watched them, began to calm down, and then got out his LEGOs.

He started creating his own compositions inspired by my work—and then built a little LEGO version of me painting in my studio. He even asked his mom to videotape him working, just like one of my painting videos.

That got me.

I spend so many hours alone in the studio making these things and eventually sending them out into the world. Most of the time, I never get to know what happens next.

This is what I hope for.

That the work doesn’t just hang on a wall. That it becomes part of a home. Part of a family. That someone connects with it, finds something in it, or is inspired to make something of their own. That’s why I do this.

And I have to say, seeing myself recreated as a tiny LEGO artist might be one of my favorite responses to a painting I’ve ever received :)

Shared with his family’s permission and with gratitude for allowing me to tell his story.

Mounting my painted papers onto a panel.

When I have some extra paint, I use it to paint shapes and marks onto paper sheets.

Once they’re dry, I use a viewfinder to look for compositions that catch my eye and cut them out. Then I mount the paper onto a wood panel, and when it’s completely dry, I trim the edges, which is what I’m doing here.

If you want to see me in action, I’ll be opening my studio at @icb_art in Sausalito tomorrow, Saturday, September 26, from 11–5. I’ll be there all day, painting, talking about the work, and sharing a little behind-the-scenes. You’ll also be able to see some of my large-scale paintings, new work, works in progress, and pieces you may not have seen before.

Come by, say hello, and spend some time in the space where the work is made. I’m in Studio 117 on the first floor. I hope to see you there.

Two spaces have just become available in my upcoming Working Big, Working Bold workshop, October 1–4, at my Sausalito studio.

This intensive four-day workshop is for artists ready to scale up, take bigger risks, and transform their approach to size, composition, and impact.

With a small group and highly focused format, there’s plenty of one-on-one guidance, hands-on demonstrations, and time to really dig into your work.

Details and registration at the link in my bio.

I had some extra red paint from my most recent painting session, so rather than let it go to waste, I use these sheets to paint shapes and marks on.

Once they’re filled up, they’re great for wrapping paper, but I also use them to isolate compositions for smaller work.

Not only is it a good way to use up leftover paint, but I’ve found it’s also a great exercise for developing your eye and finding compositions you might not have planned.
