We don’t usually do party politics on here, but on Wednesday Thomas Kerr MSP of Reform described part of his own patch, Govanhill, as a “ghetto” in Parliament.

It seems that rather than paying attention to the reality of Govanhill, he’s more interested in its “reputation”.

But reputations don’t appear from nowhere. They’re created and reinforced by what people say, particularly people with public platforms. This page has spent years trying to counter exactly this kind of lazy, damaging language about Govanhill.

I’ve never seen Thomas Kerr in Govanhill, but I’d suggest that if he wants to talk about the area, he might start by spending some time here: walking its streets, speaking to the people who live and work here, and finding out what Govanhill is actually like.

Nobody who cares about the area is pretending it doesn’t have problems but reducing one of Scotland’s most diverse communities to a “ghetto” does nothing to solve them. It simply adds to the stigma that residents have had to put up with for years.

If Mr Kerr is genuinely concerned about Govanhill, he could start by talking about what he intends to do to make it better, rather than helping to make its reputation worse. by @govanhillgo
