As this chapter closes, I just want to say thank you.

Touring the UK has been an unforgettable privilege. Eight shows a week, new cities, new audiences, new memories – and every night reminded me why I fell in love with this craft in the first place.

Thank you to the brilliant company on and off stage, the teams who keep the wheels turning without ever being seen, and everyone who came, supported, shared a message, or simply showed up. You’ve made the past months such a joy.

It’s been an honour telling this story across the country with @222aghoststory UK Tour and being welcomed into so many theatres I’d once dreamed of stepping into.

Signing off with a very full heart. Until the next one.

For Andrew Jarvis.

Andrew was one of the very first teachers we had at drama school. Day one, first class, and he walked in like a force of nature. I remember sitting there at 19 years old, absolutely spellbound. This was someone who made Shakespeare feel alive, accessible, ours.

Up until that point, Shakespeare had always been presented to people like me as some sort of elite club — for certain accents, certain backgrounds, certain educations. But Andrew walked in and basically swung the doors wide open. He made it inclusive. He made it human. He made it possible.

He told us how he’d written to the RSC again and again until they finally saw him. How he carved out his own place there. And then he turned around and showed a bunch of kids from all sorts of places that they could do the same.

Little things he taught us — how to walk on stage, how to speak, how to breathe, how to understand the thought behind a line — I still use them now, all these years later. Even after taking time out of acting and coming back, his voice is still with me. His lessons stayed in my bones.

I wish I’d taken the time to properly thank him back then. But his impact on me — and on so many people who trained with him before and after — has never gone away.

And the humour. Andrew had that dry, northern, wicked comic timing that never left him. I’ll never forget seeing him about a year after drama school — the red leather boots, the tucked in shirt, jeans and the trilby. I tapped him on the shoulder and said the famous line he’d taught us:
“Shoot that fucking bird.”
(Get rid of that negative voice on your shoulder.)

He turned around slowly, gave me that grin…then clocked my mate next to me and without missing a beat said,
“I hope that haircut’s for a fucking part.”

One of a kind.

He made Shakespeare fun. He made acting joyful. He made all of us believe we had a place in this world.

I’ll always be grateful for him. Always.
