‘The Home I Don’t Yet Know’ by Sofia Akhtar @graph.icz

“The Home I Don’t Yet Know” is a self-discovery project surrounding being a third-generation immigrant. As a Pakistani, mixed-race woman I have often felt separated from my homeland. I have never had the opportunity to visit Pakistan, and when being born and raised in England it can be hard to feel connected to my heritage. This project is an exploration of my ancestry and identity through traditional printing techniques and cultural archiving of family photos. The publication can be read either right-to-left to tell the story from my grandmother’s perspective, or left-to-right to tell the story from my own perspective.

This afternoons Posca Project

I’ve been trying to get back into hand drawing and silouhette work which I’ve found hard to keep up with whilst working on a dissertation- but this fun afternoon project was just me versus one white posca pen.

The tag at the top was already on the paper, as I ripped the paper off the side of an old billboard in New Cross.

So if you recognise whose tag that is let me know.

A Space For Me

A 2 Minute short film I made for uni. “A Space For Me” explores the feeling of intimacy and comfort we find when we are in our own space. Shut away from outside and the performative nature of day to day life. Women especially can find serenity in a place to call their own where they can revel in being themselves, for themselves with all their little things.

This film was lovely to make and holds a special place in my lickle heart now. Love to my ladies for being a part of it too. @miaaalexanderr @mahoojithink @betsyrcross 🫶🏽🫡

The story of Nubia Way : Type design Project

In this project I was asked to create a type face inspired by a building around me.
Nubia way is a self built road of houses in Lewisham, with as much character and personality as the individuals that live inside them. The residents faces extreme racism and hatred during the construction of their own houses, but never let this deter them from making a home for themselves.

Nubia Sans is inspired by the different cultures of the residents, from Caribbean to Indian the culture over flows out of Nubia way, and their houses stand to tell a story of their resilience.

After creating this type face on Glyphs I then lasered it onto a wooden slate, along with an image of the residents constructing their houses. As a testiment to the beautiful woodland around their road and their strength and resilience.
