Words don’t describe my feeling with this dog lately 🥹

We’ve been putting in the work, like any chance we can we’re doing our homework and getting ready for that trial field in 2027.

But I have to say we would not be remotely close if not for those helping and supporting us on this journey.

First a huge thank you to the decoys that develop and continue to push my dog safely! @misaelbaez who’s not in this video took such a jump helping a bunch of PSA people when it’s not his specialty as a decoy, you continued to listen and honestly created some of the most gorgeous targeting and grip in my girl when neither of that is specific to your niche, THANK YOU!

@concise.k9 who is our decoy @decoy.kev and his amazing wife in our OB @bray.n.dogs for traveling from Calgary on regular rotations to help us! You guys do not know how much we appreciate all you do for us. I would not be even remotely ready for anything if it wasn’t for your support and knowledge.

@the_discerning_dog for our regular Zoom calls helping me since Esmeralda was only a year old. I owe ALL my OB to you.. I’ve learned so much and continue to learn every call we have, I could not be more grateful for your support on my PSA journey.

And last but not least my amazing club members.. @beautiful_chaos_life_ @tirednightmare @knute_seven_swords @dutchie.rook @cherishclement11 and all the rest. You’re support is the world.

So you see, none of this is all me.. they say it takes a village but I say it takes an army. And each of you have put your battle gear on with me in this pursuit.

Thank you, thank you, thank you 🖤

Another off the bucket list! 🏔️

7:30am start we hit the trails of Wesley Ridge and the views did NOT disappoint. Not only that but Bear at 11.5 years old tackled this 4.5 hour hike with insane inclines like she was a pup.

So stupidly proud of us and glad to enjoy such an experience with my girls and hike enthusiasts 👏

I don’t think we talk enough about how hard it is to retire an animal. Whether it’s a dog or a horse, there’s a different kind of heartbreak that comes with accepting that a chapter of their life, and yours, is coming to an end. ❤️

Over the last year, Penny has been experiencing some strange episodes that ultimately led me to make the decision to retire her. We’ve since confirmed they are seizures, and although they’re few and far between, I know riding her is no longer something I can safely do.

And truthfully? It’s been hard.

She’s my only horse. I miss riding, and I’m not ready to bring another horse into my life just yet. But somewhere in all of this, I’ve realized that slowing down has given me something I didn’t know I needed. Time to settle my own mind and body, and simply enjoy her for who she is.

These days, our time together looks different. In-hand work, lunging, and letting Penny just be a horse. No expectations, no pressure, no bigger goals to chase. Just enjoying the time we have together.

With both Bear and Penny now retired, I’m learning that one of the hardest parts of loving an animal is accepting when their needs change, even when our hearts aren’t quite ready.

Retirement doesn’t mean they have nothing left to give. It just means we get to love them in a different way.

They spend so much of their lives giving us everything. The least we can do is give them the freedom to simply be. ❤️ by @grazingongratitude_

Sometimes the biggest wins in dog training aren’t the ones anyone else would notice. ❤️

Something people don’t know about Essie is that we struggle with drive dipping.

She wants SO badly to be right that when she’s unsure, she shuts down. Her confidence disappears, she creeps, and all that beautiful drive just vanishes.

For a year, I’ve been learning how to navigate this, especially in our directionals.

Today at club, an exercise we’d successfully worked on ALL week immediately caused her to drive dip.

I put her away because I was getting frustrated, and I refuse to train that way.

After another club member trained, I simplified the exercise and tried again.

BAM. Another drive dip.

I took a breath, remembered my coach’s advice (and the countless reminders to STOP overthinking 😂), grabbed a leash, and made a decision.

I wasn’t going to be her cheerleader. I was going to be her clarity.

I KNEW she understood this exercise. She needed me to confidently help her work through the uncertainty.

And by the end of that rep, we were successful.

Why share this?

Because I want to be an honest trainer.

Just because Essie is a Malinois, a sport dog, and I train professionally doesn’t mean this journey is easy.

This dog is taking every ounce of knowledge I have and asking me to become better.

She’s challenged me, frustrated me, and forced me to rethink things I thought I understood.

But today something I’ve spent YEARS learning finally clicked.

Not every difficult moment requires you to cheer your dog on. Sometimes they need you to be their clarity.

And for once, I made that decision at exactly the right moment.

To some, one successful rep means nothing.

To me? It was a year of mistakes, learning, and listening to my coaches finally coming together.

I didn’t just see progress in my dog today. I saw progress in myself as her trainer.

Essie may never be the easiest dog I build, but she might teach me the most.

I’m trying to build her into an incredible sport dog, but somewhere along the way, she’s building me into a better trainer.

And I’m so damn proud of both of us.

That’s my win today. ❤️🐾

Well our adventure day definitely was full of some twists 😂🙈

But even with all the ups and downs we successfully saw Elk Falls (in a monsoon may I add 😎), hiked a beautiful fall loop outside of it where no people were. Ryan bought me the most amazing jewel beetle taxidermy, AND ended it with a phone free seafood dinner.
