Rolf Merkelbach passed away peacefully, at home, on the 19th of October. Rolf is survived by his older brother Alfred. The Merkelbach brothers have a deep relationship with the Selbach family; Sigrid Selbach, the recently departed mother of Johannes Selbach, and Alfred attended elementary school together. Alfred left school at 14 when his own father fell ill, to maintain their small family winery; Rolf followed him soon after. Rolf and Alfred were and are people of a different time. They seem carved from the very slate that they grew vines in and were satisfied in their work and lives in a way that few people ever experience. They lived their entire life in the home they were born in, under the shadow of the Würtzgarten, one of the most famous vineyards in the Mosel. There was Zen in the way they lived their lives which translated directly into the wines they produced. Wine is incredible like that; it can reflect not just a place, but the people involved, too.

We send condolences to Alfred and the Selbach Family, who are close as people can be who are not related by blood. The Merkelbach’s, not having any heirs, entrusted their estate to the Selbach family to continue their legacy. I remember a magical afternoon I spent on an early trip to visit, with Terry. Sigrid Selbach was our chaperone at the tasting, and the brothers were in an animated and jovial mood. Wine after wine came up from the cellar, carried by Rolf and poured into the “Treveris” glasses they’d use for company. Rolf and Alfred spoke in Mosel dialect and I couldn’t understand any of the conversation. Sigrid translated, and it was joyful and laugh inducing, even before the translation came. Finally, a wine was poured that quieted the entire room; Rolf poured a bottle of the first vintage that Terry offered in the US: 1985. Trying to absorb that experience was impossible. Leaving, Terry remarked that Rolf and Alfred were “the very soul of the Mosel”. Rest in peace, Rolf.
