Heroes. It’s not the pro athletes, movie stars, politicians or tv personalities. It’s these people. The first responders like these men and women who answer the call and put their lives on the line. Yesterday, we dedicated ambulances and a vehicle to help them do their job. I was proud to work with them to get the funding. But, the thing I am most proud of is the friendship I have with ALL our volunteer firefighters and EMS. We ❤️ you all and thank you. Joining me at the ceremony were my friends @jensupervisor and @jakeblumencranz_ny . by @greatneckbiz

Lee R. Seeman (born Leah Rose Sachs) is a longtime Great Neck civic leader, former North Hempstead town councilwoman, and advocate for historic preservation and Holocaust remembrance.
In 2022 she was honored by the commemoration of “Lee Seeman Way” on Bond Street recognizing her decades of public service and involvement in the community.

Town government: Served on the North Hempstead Town Board from 2005 to 2022, representing District 5, including Great Neck Plaza and several neighboring villages.

Downtown revitalization: Worked with the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce for decades, promoting local businesses, beautification, and economic development.

Community involvement: Advocated for improvements to parks, public spaces, and municipal services.
Political involvement: Served as a Democratic Party leader and participated in national presidential campaigns. She was particularly known for bringing residents and officials together to address local problems.

One of the most significant aspects of Seeman’s career extends far beyond Great Neck.
President Bill Clinton appointed her to the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad in 1995. President George W. Bush subsequently reappointed her. She helped preserve Jewish cemeteries, document Holocaust sites, and establish memorials in Eastern Europe, including Poland, Estonia, and Latvia. In 2014, she participated in the dedication of a Holocaust memorial at the Jewish cemetery in Serock, Poland, following years of fundraising and preservation work. Lee’s great-grandfather, Michal HaCohen, was involved in early Hebrew journalism and the establishment of Nahalat Shiva, one of Jerusalem’s first neighborhoods outside the Old City walls.

Lee and her husband, Murray Seeman, moved to Great Neck in 1955 and raised four children. Murray was an attorney, real estate developer, World War II veteran, and mayor of Great Neck Estates from 1975 to 1983. He died in 2017 at age 103. #greatneck #historic #iconic by @greatneckbiz

🎃 Highland Hallows is a Halloween attraction installation at 1 Highland Avenue in Great Neck, village of Thomaston. Hosted by Stan and Jordana Levine, for over a decade, it features a residential Halloween display of elaborate decorations, animated figures, and a haunted walk-through, Giant inflatables, skeletons, and a graveyard. There is hot cider, hot chocolate for sale ($2 a cup!) candy giveaways by @the_levin_team and fundraising for St. Judes for Children, and Aiden on site for backup tours. Stan and his crew take months to prepare for Halloween week ( every second shows!!) and it takes days to take down and pack up the production after the holiday is over. Truly a labor of love for the community. The Levines are hometown heroes who make this Great Neck experience a highlight for all. (**A special shout out to you, Jordana, for the extra snacks and libations!!) @greatneckbiz #greatneck #iconic by @greatneckbiz

5 Bond Street is one of Great Neck Plaza’s most architecturally interesting commercial buildings, in the Streamline Moderne style. Constructed in 1946, the architect Manoug Exerjian actually designed a home for himself upstairs at the third-floor penthouse including and an architect’s studio and professional reception area connected by a spiral staircase. By approximately the late 1950s, the penthouse had been converted into office space.
.
Exerjian also designed several other notable Great Neck buildings, including 10 Grace Avenue, the Townhouse apartments on Cutter Mill Road and Eden Terrace at 71 Grace Ave. #greatneck #historic #iconic @greatneckbiz by @greatneckbiz

The church on Stoner Avenue is the Community Church of Great Neck, located at 2 Stoner Avenue in Great Neck Plaza. It is one of Great Neck’s most historically significant religious buildings, with roots dating back to 1914.The church began as an effort to unite Christians across Protestant denominations. Its founders envisioned a place where people could worship together regardless of their particular Protestant affiliation. In 1936 there were four bowling alleys in the building open to any group for recreation. In keeping with its original mission to serve the community, this building is currently used by three congregations including the Community Church, the Corner Stone Church of Overseas Chinese Missions, and Temple Isaiah. #greatneck #historic #iconic @greatneckhistorical @greatneckbiz by @greatneckbiz

The Rose Garden at the Village Green in Great Neck is one of the community’s most historically significant hidden treasures. What makes it particularly special is its connection to one of America’s most celebrated landscape architects, Beatrix Farrand, and to the remarkable woman who helped establish Great Neck’s public parks.Farrand was an extraordinary figure in American landscape architecture. Her other projects included the gardens at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., and the famous Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden
.
The Rose Garden’s origins date to the early 1920s, when Farrand prepared landscape designs for the Village Green. The Great Neck Park District dates the garden’s original creation to the late 1920s. The Rose Garden is closely associated with Louise Eldridge, a pioneering Great Neck civic leader.
.
Louise and her husband, Roswell Eldridge, were instrumental in establishing the Great Neck Park District in 1916. They believed that open land should be preserved for the public rather than lost to private development.
.
Louise collaborated with Farrand on the Village Green’s landscaping. Following Roswell’s death in 1927, she had the bandstand erected in his memory. That historic structure remains part of the park today.
.
The Village Green occupies land associated with the former Nirvana estate of William Gould Brokaw, a wealthy Gilded Age industrialist. His sprawling property once included a mansion, polo grounds and even a private horse-racing track. The transformation of portions of this former estate into public parkland reflected Great Neck’s evolution from an enclave of wealthy estates into a residential community with shared public spaces #greatneck #historic #iconic @greatneckbiz @greatneckparkdistrict @greatneckhistorical @greatnecklibraryhistory by @greatneckbiz

Here, a capture of modern day 11 Grace Avenue in Great Neck Plaza, built circa 1970 in a modernist architectural style. The street itself takes its name from William Russell Grace, the influential industrialist and former NYC mayor whose family helped shape Great Neck Plaza’s early commercial development. Grace is also known for maintaining his summer residence in the Village of Kings Point.
.
Before the modern commercial buildings appeared, this part of Great Neck was a mixture of modest houses, railroad-related businesses, small shops and properties controlled by early landowners. Grace’s real estate interests helped establish the commercial district, while some nearby houses were rented to railroad mechanics and engineers for approximately $10/ month. To wit: Two-story wooden houses with porches and three bedrooms once lined Grace Avenue and Park Place. #greatneck #historic #iconic by @greatneckbiz

This Great Neck LIRR station officially opened March 7, 1925, following construction by Ernest L. Smith at a reported cost of $50,000. At the time, the railroad tracks still crossed Middle Neck Road at street level. The tracks were lowered in 1935, and bridges were constructed to improve safety and traffic flow. #greatneck #historic #iconic by @greatneckbiz

This iconic Tudor Revival commercial building extending from 67 to 85 Middle Neck Road was constructed between 1919 and 1926. The building originally contained ten ground-floor shops with spacious apartments upstairs. The 1929 Great Neck telephone directory identifies Newton Bros. & Worms, a stock brokerage, at 85 Middle Neck Road, with E. W. Bolloten listed as manager. It places that securities business there during the extraordinary stock-market era immediately preceding the October 1929 crash!

The 1955 Robinson’s Great Neck directory lists Edythe Merrill, a specialty shop, at 85 Middle Neck Road, telephone HU 2-9782. By 1969, the address housed Gertrude Yusen Party Shop, advertised as the “Original One Stop Party Shop.” The storefront subsequently became Haagen Dazs at 85 Middle Neck Road in October 2008, just in time for the financial crisis beginning that year. It appears that good ice cream is popular in good times and bad. #greatneck #iconic #historic @greatneckbiz by @greatneckbiz
