Then & Now 🌱
A look back at where it all began.

50 years later… same farm, same roots, just a few more wrinkles and a whole lot more plants! 😂🌺

We’re still growing, still blooming, and still getting our hands dirty. 🌿

50 years of mornings like this. 🌅

The sun rises. The work begins. The plants grow.

Some things never change — and we wouldn’t want them to.

Grateful for every day we have been on this land. 🌿

Better late than never.
First and foremost, I want to congratulate everyone involved with Hawaii Floriculture and Nursery Association’s Fresh Look 2026. From the presenting designers to the event participants to our hardworking volunteers to the places and people on our nursery tour and to our generous sponsors, all of you helped to create an incredibly successful floral experience. What unfolded over the three days embodies the culture of our floral community. Designers and floral enthusiasts from Hawaii, across the U.S. and Canada and as far away as the Netherlands and Tahiti came together because of their passion for floral design. And it’s that passion that binds us. Total strangers greeted each other with the spirit of aloha.
When we first started these floral educational events, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine after ten years we would have such an international representation. But that’s the power of flowers and the art of floral design presented by worldclass floral designers and educators: Hitomi Gilliam AIFD, Bruno Duarte, Helen Miller AIFD, CF, CAFA, Lois Hiranaga AIFD and Sue Tabbal-Yamaguchi AIFD, EMC. I also want to mention design assistants Justin Everts and Cory Ho AIFD.
I want to share what I said in my opening remarks at the start of Fresh Look 2026.
Hawaii Floriculture and Nursery Association is made up of small family-run operations across the islands. For cut flower growers, floral designers not only help to sustain our businesses, but they also showcase our tropical products at weddings and events across the country and beyond. So, it behooves us to support floral design education to help keep our floral industry vibrant and moving forward.
For us simple cinder farmers to have this synergistic relationship with the world of floral design is worth the challenges in agriculture. Having gifted designers create tropical floral designs with such artistry and innovation is what motivates us to grow the best products possible.
Floral design is an art that is always evolving and it’s unique to the artist’s imagination. The possibilities are endless.

Looking at these photos, it’s amazing to see just how much has changed. The farms have grown, the operation has evolved, and the vision has become bigger than we could have imagined back then.

But at the heart of it all, some things will never change.

The love for the land.
The pride in what we grow.
The people who make it possible.
And the commitment to continue what our Founder started 50 years ago.

Same passion.
Same commitment.
Same roots.
A bigger vision. 🌱

Every journey begins with a single dream.

From humble beginnings to where we stand today, every flower we’ve grown, every partnership we’ve built, and every person who has been part of Green Point Nurseries has helped shape our story.

In 1976, our founder, Mr. Harold T. Tanouye Jr., envisioned sharing the beauty of Hawaiʻi’s tropical flowers and foliage with the world. Through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, that vision blossomed into a company built on quality, integrity, and family values.

These photos feature the man who made it all possible—our founder, Mr. Harold Tanouye, Jr. To us, he was so much more than the founder of Green Point Nurseries. He was our father, our grandfather, our mentor, our friend, and an extraordinary man whose wisdom, generosity, and passion left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Although he is no longer with us, his spirit continues to guide us every day. His legacy is reflected not only in the flowers we grow, but in the people we serve, the relationships we’ve built, and the generations that proudly carry his vision forward.

To our employees, customers, partners, and friends—thank you for being part of this incredible journey. The story of Green Point Nurseries is one of resilience, family, and aloha.
Fifty years is more than a milestone; it’s the foundation for everything still to come.

Here’s to the next chapter.

We owe U.S. @repjilltokuda a debt of gratitude for including Green Point Nurseries, Inc on her big island farm tour. She hosted members of the U.S. House Committee on agriculture (which she is a member) including Chairman, Representative GT Thompson.

It was an incredible opportunity to share our floral industry with these members of Congress. We shared how we as growers collaborate with the University of Hawai`i’s breeding program and floral designers to contribute to a vibrant industry.

It was also incredibly important for these Representatives to see firsthand Hurricane Lala’s impact on Big Island agriculture.

Mahalo nui to Representative Tokuda for taking the initiative.
