On the centenary of Satish Gujral’s (@gujralfoundation) birth year, architect and artist Vishal K Dar (@vishalkdar) reflects on the polymath’s exceptional oeuvre and contribution to Indian architecture, art and sculpture.

Accounts of Indian modernism often separate the painter from the architect. Gujral unsettles that division. Many of his paintings remained untitled until Kiran, his wife, named them for exhibitions; he wanted viewers to arrive at them through their own instincts. Architecture invites a related freedom of encounter. A person does not take in a building at once but discovers it through presence and proximity. Gujral’s time at Sir J.J. School of Art, Mexican muralism, Chandigarh and his Delhi home helped him test what could happen when an image acquired a wall, and a wall became inhabitable space. He is the only artist of his times to have done an expansive range of public mural commissions. What makes him a polymath are his never-ending investigations across media and scale seen in his murals, sculptures and architecture.

Presenting AD’s November-December 2026 cover: The enduring genius of Satish Gujral (@gujralfoundation)

Satish Gujral’s practice moved across disciplines, materials and scales, continually challenging the boundaries between art and architecture. The cover of our November–December issue brings this breadth into focus, through works that reflect his creative world and the people and ideas that shaped it.

Designed by Gujral in collaboration with architect Raj Rewal, his Delhi home was later converted into a gallery by his son, architect Mohit Gujral. The renovation stripped the structure back to its brickwork and introduced white walls, while preserving a curved ceramic wall by Gujral’s wife, the artist Kiran Gujral. For our cover photograph, a metal relief mural by Satish, created years earlier, was brought into the gallery and photographed alongside Kiran’s ceramic work. One belongs to an earlier chapter of the family’s life; the other has remained part of the home through its many changes. The living room that once resonated with conversations among family and friends is now part of a gallery where people gather around art and architecture. The photograph brings these different moments into relation, offering a glimpse of the many strands of Gujral’s creative life. His movement between painting, sculpture, murals and architecture was informed by lived experience and cultural influences, and by a willingness to continually rethink the possibilities of each medium.

In the centenary year of his birth, Gujral’s work offers a way into Reclamation: an exploration of what we inherit, what we choose to carry forward, and the new possibilities that emerge when we look at it afresh. This question runs through the issue, from architecture and art to design and the objects that hold personal and collective histories.

Losing his hearing at eight could have silenced him forever. Instead, it sparked a lifelong pursuit of expression.

A Brush with Life, Satish Gujral’s autobiography, is reissued for his birth centenary with a new foreword by Mohit Gujral. Swipe through the painter, sculptor, muralist and architect, and the encounters, from Faiz and Paz to Rivera, Kahlo and Nehru, that shaped him.

Revisit Satish Gujral through the people who knew him, his familial connections, friendships and place in India’s cultural history. Explore the connection with Khushwant Singh and the refreshed perspective on his life in the book edited by him.

In 2025, Satish Gujral would have turned 100. This year, his story reaches the page.

Khushwant Singh and Satish Gujral were dear friends. Khushwant believed he was writing Satish’s autobiography. Satish, meanwhile, had only asked him to edit it and write a foreword. That’s the kind of friendship they shared.

A little misunderstanding, a great deal of affection, and a story that continues to bring us closer to one of India’s most remarkable modernists.

As we celebrate Satish Gujral’s centenary, we return to the stories, friendships and ideas that shaped his extraordinary life.

$An evening where art met theatre. At Satish Gujral: The Modernist Returns, the evening unfolded through a guided exhibition walkthrough, followed by a theatrical rendering of Sa’adat Hasan Manto’s Mozelle, enacted by Shashwita Sharma. (@jashn_e_qalam ) Set in Partition-era Bombay, Mozelle inhabits a world fractured by communal violence, where love, desire and identity become acts of defiance. At its heart is a young Jewish woman who refuses to be defined by convention or claimed by anyone. As we celebrate Satish Gujral’s centenary, we look forward to more such encounters across art, literature and performance. Satish Gujral: The Modernist Returns is presented by JSW Foundation (@jsw.foundation , @jsw.group, @sangita.jindal ).
