Mahara (Memory), 2026 Ko māua ko tōku pāpā i Tikitiki (My dad and I in Tikitiki) This is a series of portraits of my father, made on the land of our ancestors in Tikitiki, Kākākarere and Huraki on the East Cape of NZ’s North Island.   I grew up in Australia, and this work is my homecoming: a tender, aching reach back towards the East Cape, our whānau (family) and him.   Before the camera, there was listening. I sat with designers, my uncle, my sisters, and my dad, and felt the weight of everything he carries, and everything that was carried to him.   Standing on that land, I felt our ancestors close, heavy, holy, and proud. Special thanks to the designers involved, @rhodanunn @akkida_archive @joshjozsef @laurencesabrine Feeling very lucky to have been shortlisted for RUSSH creative showcase 2026! Public voting is live! https://www.russh.com/russh-creative-showcase-2026-voting/ More photos of Mahara to come xoxo by @gunnvisuals

Mahara (Memory), 2026 Ko māua ko tōku pāpā i Tikitiki (My dad and I in Tikitiki) My father stepped in front of the lens. His nervousness melted into joy, and I watched him become playful, mischievous, and free, laughing in the same breath that he grieved. I have tried to hold every one of those feelings in each frame. What do you carry from the people before you? Whose land holds you, even from far away? When did you last watch a parent soften, step out of their role and simply be themselves? Somewhere in that day, my heart broke open. I realised this would most likely be the last time my dad and I stood together on the East Cape, and every frame became a promise to remember. This is a moment I will speak about for the rest of my life. photography & styling: @gunnvisuals model: Tony Gunn designers: @rhodanunn @akkida_archive @joshjozsef @laurencesabrine Very lucky that this series was shortlisted for RUSSH creative showcase 2026! @russhmagazine <3 by @gunnvisuals
