We got some updated shots by @adanramosphotography, so we figured it was time for a re-introduction! 🤩🖤 Our mission is to “lower barriers to access for marginalized communities in fitness, expanding joy through movement.” GSEQ has been running for over TWO years now, and we are so excited to continue growing with you all! We have three MAIN programs in doing this work: - Community Power Hours: free, monthly community-based fitness events (hosted in different gym spaces around Portland!) - Access Program: We’re currently partnered with three gyms in the Portland area: @rosecityrecroom @eastside_kettlebell_collective @evergreenstrength to provide subsidized coaching memberships to our community members seeking resources! - DEI Trainings for Coaches: We host CEU-accredited trainings for other fitness professionals and coaches, expanding equity in the industry as a whole. WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO: Gym Space Equity was founded in 2024 with the mission of “lowering barriers and increasing representation for BIPOC communities in fitness, expanding joy through movement.” We are so beyond grateful for the support in our work! And yet, a sentiment we often get is: “I didn’t know what was needed.” “What ARE some of the barriers that people face, in accessing gyms/coaching resources?” THIS is why. Hear it directly from our participants. As part of our framework, GSEQ hosts: - Community Power Hour events (monthly, educational + fitness workshops, with specific focused topics for every event) - BIPOC Affinity Lifting Hour (hosted at our partner gyms, these affinity spaces are free to attend) When registering for each one, we ask our participants the same question: “What brought you here? What barriers have you faced when entering fitness spaces?” Each response represents an individual story behind a collective experience. By hosting events that are FREE, community-oriented, trauma-informed, and capacity-building, we help mitigate some of those barriers. And these anecdotes are reflected in greater research, too. We have to work to create change in this industry, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. 🖤GSEQ Reference: Obi OC, Nnonyelu AC, Onobrakpeya A, Ogundele OJ. Creating inclusive spaces asks us to look beyond our intentions and get curious about our impact. It means questioning what we’ve been taught, noticing what we might be missing, and being willing to do things differently. Join us for Who Gets to Take Up Space? a collaborative workshop with Gym Space Equity exploring what it means to create movement spaces where more people can show up as themselves. Who Gets to Take Up Space? Saturday, November 7 | 9:00-12:00 PM Because belonging isn’t something we get to declare for others. It’s something we have to practice. by @gymspaceequity
Hear from a member’s experience! Gym Space Equity is honored to provide more accessible coaching resources to our community members, at each of our partner gyms. In 2026, we’ve really grown this program, and gotten to directly support about 12 individuals thorugh our Access Program. One of our members, @ln.desh shares his story here! He’s been training under the Equity Fund at @evergreenstrength for a couple of months now, and has become such an important part of the community. At GSEQ, we believe: - Strength training is a form of community care. - Everyone deserves access to the empowerment and joy that movement can bring. - By creating these intentional spaces, we make that more possible. We LOVE partnering with @evergreenstrength in this pursuit, and can’t wait to see where Liam continues to go! #membertestimonial #equitablefitness #portlandnonprofit #portlandgyms #inclusivefitness by @gymspaceequity
