Hailey Mills.

I made this portrait as part of Hailey's graduation photoshoot at SMU.

We were inside Dallas Hall when I saw the possibility of using the architecture, not simply as a background, but as part of the photograph itself.

So I asked Hailey to step into the frame, reached for the camera, and let the space do some of the work.

Sometimes a portrait is about getting closer.

Sometimes it's about stepping back.

BS in electrical and computer engineering ✅
Minor in mathematics ✅

204 credit hours, 5 years, 86 classes, 14 labs, 2 bachelor degrees and 1 minor.

I can’t believe the day finally came. This last academic year flew by in the best possible way. I’m so extremely grateful to my professors, friends, academic advisors, and family for helping me pursue and achieve these accomplishments of mine.

To the ECE+ cohort, I’m so thankful to have gotten closer with you all this year. I have so many precious memories with you all, and I hope your future pathways cross mine again.

To my parents, thank you for always believing in my abilities and giving me the strength to continue doing my best. I love you both and I’m so glad I got to celebrate with you.

To my siblings and family, I love you all and I’m thankful for your support throughout the years. I always look forward to our wassup Wednesday text messages!

As I have been reflecting and remembering my time at @smudallas, I thought back to freshman year. When I first moved to Dallas, and I started meeting people during orientation, people always ask what degree you’re earning. I would tell them a BFA in dance performance and a BS in engineering, though I wasn’t sure which one yet. I usually got 3 types of reactions from that. One would be shock, at how distinct and opposite the degrees are. Another was to ask me if I was pursuing dance for passion and engineering for the career. And my least favorite was a laugh and a “we’ll see in 4 years if that’s still true”. So maybe it wasn’t 4 years, but I had set my mind to it.

It was hard, and at times I did lose my passion for dance and engineering, I did lose my motivation to continue the path I’d chosen for myself. But I never gave up. My passion came back, for both dance and engineering. And I’m so proud of myself for not letting my light go out; after all, the hard times are only temporary.

Thank you for the last 5 years ❤️
