I’m finally launching my copper photogravure workshops in Bristol!

What happens when a photographic image becomes an etched copper plate? Copper photogravure grew out of William Henry Fox Talbot’s experiments in the 1850s and was refined by Karel Klíč in 1879. Unlike halftone photo-etching, which builds tones from dots, photogravure etches the plate at varying depths to create rich, subtle tonal transitions.

Since I began teaching myself the process in 2023, I’ve fallen in love with the depth it can bring to an image. I’ve also become increasingly aware of the importance of finding an alternative to the traditional dichromate sensitiser.
Over the past year, I’ve been experimenting with DAS and FAC, making my own gelatine tissue and testing how these materials respond on copper. I’m excited to share what I’ve learnt so far.

The two-day workshop takes you through the full process, with hands-on experience at each stage. The four-day workshop gives you time to repeat and refine the process, explore the technical details in greater depth, and try additional printing techniques.

Each workshop is limited to four participants, with plenty of time to ask questions and work closely together.
I can’t wait to share this beautiful process with you!

It grew out of my interest in time and memory, and in how a city slowly becomes part of personal experience. This work took shape during my stay @swatchartpeacehotel , through daily observation of Shanghai.

I chose plane trees because they are inseparable from the city’s streets. Winter is when they feel most honest to me. As their bark peels away, dense and scarred textures emerge, where ageing and renewal coexist. I photographed an entire street of plane trees along Dingxi Road and combined fragments from seven different trees into one continuous form, one tree made from many lives. Numbers written and carved into the innermost bark, left by those who care for the trees, revealed that the trees are quietly recorded and remembered.

Realised through the process of intaglio printmaking, the work takes the form of two long plane trees in copper and paper. The copper tree acts as the matrix, while the burnt and eroded paper tree appears as its print, reflecting how lived experience becomes memory, partial, fragile, and constantly shifting.

Thanks @art.chengyen and @liqihangartist for helping me install the trees! Photos taken by brilliant @art.chengyen ✨🤎

Stop-motion animations using etchings as the medium for the image frames 🔲✨

‘Transition’ is a project that I explore the nuances of time perception and memory metamorphosis by merging video documentation, etchings, and stop-motion animation. The foundational materials of this work consist of videos and photos that capture ephemeral moments, light in the dark, and captivating transitions within everyday life.

A very special Halloween! 🎃✨

Yesterday I ran my very first copper photogravure workshop- a less toxic process in Bristol!

Day One! ✨
Everyone learnt how to make their own gelatine tissue, expose images under UV light, and transfer the gelatine onto copper plates.

I can’t wait to see how they turn out after etching today!

Such a lovely group of people! @emmagregorymakes gave the best support for this workshop! It was a real joy to share my techniques, experiments and research with everyone❤️
Thanks @tamarakalo_ for taking photos📷

Recently I had the pleasure of running another lithography workshop for the group of printmakers from @wait_and_roll, the print studio of @hammerchen1113 in Shanghai, who were visiting the UK for their third Printmaking and Illustration tour. This time they came to Oaks Park for two days, so we were able to include more than on their previous visits. This is Day 1 - graining, drawing, processing the stone and printing in one colour.

Many thanks to @hammerchen1113 for photos 2-4, 7-12, 15, 16 and 20.
