The National Championship. Shot for @cfbplayoff

Ohio State defeats Notre Dame for the National Championship in a clash of two iconic football programs.

A couple of years ago, I mentioned to @kevinjairaj that if he ever needed someone to live up in the catwalk for him during the CFP championship to give me a call. He called a couple months ago and I knew exactly what I wanted to do. In fact, I have thought about the lead picture since I shot the 2018 championship in this same stadium. Thanks to NPS, they got me the lens I needed to execute the vision. The hard part? Making it actually work and finding the only mounting position that would yield an unobstructed view of the halo board opening to the field below. At first when I got up to the Oculus (the roof structure that opens like an aperture at the top of the stadium), I did not think that I would be able to pull it off. After getting on my rigging harness and making the initial trip out to the center I had to collect my thoughts and control some anxiety and think the problem through. Soon a solution was found and I got to work for the next three hours with positioning three @nikonusa Z9 bodies over the center of the field. The fisheye was complimented by a 14-24mm and a 70-200mm. After the cameras were set and secured with appropriate safety measures/restraints, the laborious job of wiring and networking the 3 cameras and then running 250ft of ethernet & power out of the Oculus and then another 250ft of ethernet to a switch at the bottom of the halo board. This was done with the help and skill of @peterjamescasey who put up with me working late into the night on Saturday and Sunday to make sure the setup was flawless. On game day @julioaaguilar got the remote images down, edited & distributed with great speed and efficiency.

More thanks in the comments! ⬇️

Let me know how I did, which images are your favorites and if you have any questions!

@breederscup World Championships for @thebloodhorse

To say @keeneland was in fine form this past week would be an understatement. The scene and the athletes were nothing short of exceptional. My assignment was to try and blend the action with the beauty for the fourteen World Championship races held over two days. I was only to set one remote on the starting gate. A lone remote at a horse race is something I had never done before. So I roamed to try and find as many different angles as possible and relied on the new @nikonusa 120-300mm f2.8 TC lens for the majority of my images. The 24-120mm served as sidekick and the 14-24mm a complement to round out a new look Trinity of lenses for the ultimate setup for a wildcard assignment such as this.

To spice things up I also brought out the IR converted Z8 for some purple toned images to lean into the primary color for the event.

Big thanks to @corradophotography @pva_1964 @michaeldionne and NPS for the support not only for myself but for all the photographers at the races this past week!

Business decision.

What I choose to look at is a creative decision. What I choose to have in my hands is a business decision. Those decisions are always made with the purpose of allowing me more freedom creatively. The @nikonusa 120-300mm f2.8 TC lens stands on business and both that and the speed of my creativity are improved with this lens in my hands.

When the announcement for this lens was made, I was not immediately interested in it as I have always lived on my 400mm 2.8 TC. The 400mm has been a bread and butter lens for me for almost 2 decades. However, my vision constantly evolves and I am always looking for ways to do things better, faster and smarter. This summer I started to see the benefit of having this focal range and once this lens was in my hands, immediately I knew it would have not just a place in my bag but a very prominent one.

Kudos to my #Nikon family on a phenomenal new lens. Preorder was made first thing this morning!

Wolverines.

What a weekend to be back in the Big House. Ten years since I was last on campus at the University of Michigan for a football game, I had the chance to return with the @nikonusa EDU program to speak to staff and students on Friday evening and then to help as a guest player for the @umichvisuals team for the game the following day against Penn State. Thanks to @ericbronsonphoto and his entire team for the incredible hospitality and to the football team for an incredibly exciting second half. Hard to beat the atmosphere at the Big House, one of football’s grandest cathedrals. Now I just need to cover a game against Ohio State here sometime!

I done put my whole arm in the rim, Vince Carter.

@accsports Tipoff 2026.

This year’s set was the inverse of last year where the box was wrapped with black and I used Broncolor Para133 with a grid to create a focused light with wrap. Knowing I would be working with white this year, I opted for two separate looks to stretch things out a bit in the very minimal time I would be working with as I have to split time with the social team for their needs. As a result, I often had less than 4 minutes with some players which makes it tough to get into a rhythm and collaborate collectively with the players to make something engaging and special which is always my purpose. To accomplish a diversity of looks this year, I opted for light modifiers on opposite ends of the spectrum. I used a pair of Broncolor Satos 1600 packs with Pulso L heads. One was modified with the Elinchrom 74” octa which is the gold standard for me in large, soft sources with incredible wrap. The other was modified with a Westcott optical spot through a wide angle lens so I could light the entire box without a spot and get a nice crispy shadow.

To stretch things out when I had the time, I also incorporated multiple exposures on my Nikon Z9 to have a little creative fun when time allowed. Unfortunately that time was minimal at best.

Which look do you prefer?

Ingredients:
Nikon Z9
Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 S II
Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 S
2X Broncolor Satos 1600
2X Broncolor Pulso L 3200w
Elinchrom 74” Octa
Westcott Optical Spot (wide angle)
2X Sandisk Pro-Cinema 320GB
1 large white box
Ball

Texas A&M sophomore and future top overall pick in the NFL Draft, @flash_garrett shows off a captured frame to freshman teammate and future top overall pick in the NFL Draft, Kyler Murray before a game against Vanderbilt.

To celebrate the start of football season I do not offer a carousel of images from seasons past. Instead a single frame but one of a moment that I especially enjoyed. While I hate the majority of photos I take because I am hyper critical, I do get satisfaction when despite the flaws I see, the subject enjoys and appreciates the moment captured. What is even more fun for me is when a frequent subject is curious enough to want to pick up the camera and have a look.

Fun fact. Fast forward 11 years and not only is Myles arguably the best player to have worn the maroon and white, the NFL’s record holder for the most sacks in a single season and in pursuit of surpassing the 200 sack record but @manoftomorrow is also damn handy with a camera in his hands.

Hope to see him on the sidelines again one of these days and hope everyone has a great season!

Now that the summer break is behind us, here is a little something from earlier this season to get you in the mood for the return to racing this weekend!

This May I had the distinct pleasure of teaming up with @f1mia to give an artistic twist to the pinnacle of motorsports. I knew that I would be leaning into my work with multiple exposures and in camera overlays. But I wanted to to be different than I had done in the past and I wanted to lean into the core colors of the race that makes the Miami GP unique. So I had a new @nikonusa Z8 converted to record full spectrum IR and created new picture control profiles in NX Studio to effectively do channel swaps and color manipulation at the moment of capture…and then use those images with the overlays.

It was an incredible weekend working with and around great people of F1 Miami and @twocirclesmade
