As the list of Black women lost to domestic violence continues to grow, so does the urgency of a conversation many have tried to avoid. Black femicide is not new, but it is being named more clearly, and the truth is impossible to ignore. In a conversation with theGrio, Sterling K. Brown reflects on this painful reality through the lens of his role in Is God Is, pointing to something deeper than individual acts of violence: a long history of division that has separated Black men and women by design.

“There is a way for us to be in concert, not competition,” Brown said. “We don’t have to drink the Kool Aid.”

He challenges Black men to see Black women not as adversaries, but as partners. To reject the narratives that pit us against each other. To recognize that division has always been a tool, and that we don’t have to keep playing into it.

These conversations aren’t easy, but the actor tells theGrio he hopes the film #IsGodIs opens the door for viewers and communities to start having them.

This week, Hanifa founder Anifa Mveumba announced she’s hitting pause on her business, and social media quickly hit play on a broader conversation.

From delayed orders and concerns about communication to the pressures placed on Black-owned brands, the moment has sparked debate about accountability, support, and what it really means to extend grace.

“Right now, I’m reflecting. And I’m allowing myself to be human in the process. I don’t want to rush just to prove resilience,” Mveumba wrote in an open letter.

“I don’t want to pretend everything is fine just to keep momentum.”

Two things can be true: customers deserve reliable service and clear communication, and businesses can still be navigating real challenges behind the scenes.

@haniyxh shared her perspective in the video above, but we want to hear from you.

#GrioFam, what do you think about this moment and the conversation around grace for Black-owned businesses? by @haniyxh

If you’ve ever checked your phone to see who’s at your door, thank Black people for helping make it possible!

In the 1960s, nurse Marie Van Brittan Brown created the first home security system so she could feel safer at a time when police response in Black neighborhoods was slow and unreliable. Her husband, an electronics technician helped her create a unique system with cameras, two-way audio, remote door access, and an emergency alarm. The invention became the blueprint for the video doorbells and home security systems we rely on today.

The Browns’ innovation didn’t just protect their family. It changed how we protect our homes. Black partnership and collaboration literally saving lives.

If it weren’t for us, the world would be a lot different.
