@hardacre.sarah for @circlezeroeight Issue 09 featuring commissioned collages and an interview with Nick Davie ‘Out of the Archive, Into the Street’ In 1917 a Barrow munitions team beat a Glasgow side 4-0 in front of 15,000 people. Sarah Hardacre, a collage artist and cultural producer fell in love with Barrow during a yearlong residency funded through Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places programme. “I really took Barrow to my heart,” she says. What she found was Dorothée Pullinger, an engineer who arrived at the Vickers shipyard in her early twenties during the WWI and was given charge of roughly 7,000 women making munitions. Pullinger, the daughter of Thomas Pullinger of the Arrol-Johnston motorworks in Paisley, did something else almost nobody in Barrow now seems to remember. She set up a football team. “She was made the first female superintendent in the shipyard ever,” Hardacre says. “Single working-class girls were flooding into Barrow from all over the country chasing the work, helping the war effort. Sport became an answer to that. Dorothy set up the Barrow Munitions Girls football team.” This in turn influenced a set of new collages, Georgia Stanway, the Bayern Munich and England midfielder from Barrow, set against archival images of the munitions team, the shipyard at the end of a terraced street, and the women who took to the pitch again after 1970. Reflecting on the parade she organised she says it was “just a feeling of joy. A feeling of solidarity, of sisterhood, of bringing it back. Celebrate your mum, celebrate your sisters, celebrate the women in your lives.” Women, she points out, are proud and do not shout their accomplishments. 🔗Click the link in our bio to view available works by Sarah Hardacre For sales enquiries, or further information please contact info@paulstolper.com by @hardacre.sarah
the modernist x BDP present - The BDP Talk Series. 5.2 - In Conversation - Jen Orpin and Sarah Hardacre. Wednesday 25th November 2026 6.15PM FOR A 6.30PM START BDP, 11 Ducie St, Manchester M1 2JB This evening seeks to discover the inspirations and motivations of two artists who have been long time friends and collaborators of the modernist - Jen Orpin and Sarah Hardacre - and find out what the continuing fascination for concrete structures holds for both of them. Jen Orpin 'The structures I focus on, often constructed from concrete and metal, brutal in nature are familiar landmarks that straddle well-travelled motorways and roads. The motorway bridge, often unchanged and built to last, offer sturdiness and a consistent presence that spans decades in frequently developed and changing environments. They may be accompanied by the addition of graffiti; protest slogans or nature and weeds might have taken hold only adding to this presence and giving these brutalist landmarks the enduring quality of a monument. By documenting and recording these structures using the language of painting, I aim to expand our perceptions and viewpoints and challenge how we look at these structures in our everyday landscapes and draw on the connections we make through our memories and belonging to these places. Sarah Hardacre Sarah Hardacre is a visual artist, printmaker and cultural producer based in Manchester. In both her personal and public practice, Hardacre is a visual archivist and historian, immersed in trawling through images in public archives to reveal hidden narratives. Her collage and print works explore the experience of women within the urban built environment and the complex relationship between female bodies, architecture and space. Great to have launched The ‘East Lancs Export Co.’ during Rossendale Art Trial this weekend. A big thanks to our host at Park Mill Anna Warburton & to @scodler77 for inviting us home to curate an exhibition. East Lancs Export Co. brings together five artists originating from East Lancashire whose work have overlapping themes of identity & heritage, class & industry, estrangement & belonging, leaving & returning. And after decades of deindustrialisation & rail closures what we’ve decided is, East Lancashire exports contemporary artists. Thanks for all the lovely brave visits on a standard weather weekend for Rossendale, and to @findyourpinkprints & @mikeakelly.work who had excellent exhibition spaces too. Did you know that Stockport’s largest artwork is a car park? The pierced concrete screen wrapping the Merseyway multi-storey is by Marple-born artist Alan Boyson (1930–2018). It’s built from just three basic modules, each rotated to make six variations, repeated in a rhythm that reads as random. It was commissioned by the Co-operative Society for the car park beside their store. The store’s architect, Philip Andrew, was Boyson’s childhood friend from Marple. It was Boyson’s dad, manager of the Marple Co-op, who put Philip forward for his apprenticeship at the CWS in 1951. Two Marple lads, one shopping centre, and art built into the places people shop, park and walk past every day. The Marvel From Marple at @stockr__m is the first major exhibition of Boyson’s work, developed by artist @blanche_pictures and @shipsinthesky63. It’s on until 30 September. As part of the programme, I’m running a collage workshop on Saturday 26 September at 12pm. We’ll cut up images of Boyson’s architecture from the Stockport Archives and rebuild the town as the Stockport of your imagination. No experience needed, all materials provided, 18+. In 1965 a brand new shopping centre opened in Stockport. Built over the River Mersey and designed by architects Bernard Engle and Partners, the development kept pedestrians apart from the traffic, with shops spread across two levels. In 1972 the architectural writer Ian Nairn singled Merseyway out as a model for planning shopping and parking together. These 1980s photographs from the Stockport Archives show it in full colour, with its old shops and its modernist architecture in everyday use. . Merseyway is now home to the Stockport Archives at Stockroom, where the current exhibition The Marvel From Marple, celebrating the life and work of Marple-born artist Alan Boyson and developed by @shipsinthesky63 runs till 30th September. . As part of the programme, on Saturday 26 September I’m running a collage workshop that asks what Stockport could look like next. We’ll take archive images of the town, layer them with magazines and books, and build new versions of it, from utopias to fantasy lands. . 12pm, two hours, all materials provided and no experience needed. Book through the link in bio or via @stockr__m. 📷 Merseyway Shopping Centre, 1980s.
