This post is all Kimmie's fault. She goaded me into reading the new Liz Truss book "Bank Job". Here's the beginning of the preface. "This book is the story of what happened in 2022. But it’s more than that. It’s the story of the power of an elite in Britain that has run the country into the ground." Oh god, not another another history of the last Tory government? "It’s a story of unelected bureaucrats who are more powerful than those who are meant to be in charge. And it is a story about how hard it is to arrest Britain’s precipitous decline. It’s also a story about which you will have read very little in the mainstream media. Save for a few exceptions, virtually no journalists and commentators have sought to inquire into the decision-making at the Bank of England and other unaccountable yet powerful state institutions. Almost no one has asked any of the awkward questions that would shine a light on what went on – and continues to occur – behind some very tightly closed doors in the corridors of power both on Threadneedle Street and on Whitehall. The media class were all too quick to accept a fake establishment narrative about the 2022 crisis, while ignoring the culpability of the Bank of England and its role in bringing down the Government. This book aims to arm you with some of the facts." ChatGPT, write a preface about my new spoof book on a conspiracy theory. Include references to the deep state, stories that aren't in the mainstream media, fake news and secrets behind the closed doors of the corridors of power. Ham it up, I don't want anyone to be in any doubt that this is a spoof conspiracy theory. by @harunmushod
I'm reading THE SCIENCE OF RACISM (2025) by Keon West, a professor of social psychology specialising in, among other topics, the psychology of prejudice. The book is a survey of the current scientific evidence, particularly meta-analytical studies (the gold standard of scientific evidence), of the continued widespread existence of racism. The book is intended for the general reader. I should say that the book in general is absolutely excellent and highly recommended. However, this bit made me laugh out loud. To put it in context, Professor West has already argued convincingly, that unconscious racist bias is overstated, which serves to mask the widespread existence of more explicit types of racism. Nevertheless... "... I’ve been made to take unconscious bias training in my workplace. That’s right, me! A Black professor of social psychology with several publications on racism and prejudice reduction to my name. I’ve also had to be ‘educated’ (by someone with fewer relevant degrees than myself) about what racism is, how it works and what I can do about it. We are clearly approaching the diversity training singularity, in which every single person on the planet will eventually be made to do some form of diversity training, probably involving unconscious bias education. So, before we go any further down this path, it seems wise to figure out if all this time, money and effort is being wasted, or if it’s going towards something useful." (p.221) I havent read on from this bit yet, but my guess is, he thinks it isn't useful. I'm also guessing Professor West, social psychologist specialising in the psychology of prejudice: - got into trouble with his university's HR department for resisting going on an Unconscious Bias course. - gave his Unconscious Bias trainer a hard time on the course, possibly resulting in another visit to HR. by @harunmushod
