“Well yes, but we’re going to make a slight detour via Brazil” 🤪

When we left home, that was the plan. But now, 3 years later, we’ve found ourselves on the Atlantic coast of Brazil! 🇧🇷

Our Journey so far:
🌲1.5 months in the US
☀️12 months in Mexico
🏝️8 months in Central America
🏔️16 months in South America

We love the freedom and flexibility that comes with travelling in our van. If we want to go somewhere, we put the destination in our GPS and off we go!

We have a month left on our Brazilian visa (and we plan to use up every single day because we love Brazil so much). Then we’ll continue our journey south to Ushuaia! 🤩

Today we’re celebrating being on the road for 1,000 days! 🤯🥳

1,000 days ago (October 26, 2022), we finished building our van, left our parents driveway, and crossed the border into the US to begin our van life adventure. At the time, the only plan we had was to go to Mexico. We never thought in a million years we’d drive all the way to Chile! 🤯

We took a little virtual drive down memory lane and compiled all the days we’ve spent exploring each country of our journey. We’ve driven over 40,000 kms through 15 countries! 🤯🌎🚐

Have a swipe through them to see where our adventures have taken us😆💕

Hey everyone! We’ve had our account for 4.5 years and I don’t think we’ve ever done an “introduction post” so here it is! 😁

We’re Hayley, Jake 👫🏻 and Finnley 🐾 we live and travel in our van and here’s 6 fun things about us 😁

1️⃣ Hayley was born in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 but moved to Canada when she was a teen, and Jake and Finnley are both Canadian. 🇨🇦

2️⃣ 4 months into our relationship we took our first ever trip together. It was a 2 week road trip around Iceland 🌋in the tiniest of vans. This was our introduction to Vanlife and ever since then, road tripping has been our favourite way to travel! 🚐

3️⃣ We’ve been travelling full time for almost 1.5 years in our campervan that we built ourselves! We drove it from Canada, down through the US and Baja, then across mainland Mexico to the Yucatán peninsula. Now we’re making our way through Belize, Guatemala and we will soon be crossing into El Salvador.
🇨🇦🇺🇸🇲🇽🇧🇿🇬🇹🇸🇻

4️⃣ We’re both engineers (Jake- Mechanical/Electrical, Hayley- Chemical) Jake used to design electric vehicles 🚗 for mines, then worked a contract designing water slides for parks! 🛝 Hayley worked in uranium processing 👩🏻‍🔬

5️⃣ We have a love for adventure and experiencing new cultures. 🏕️ We’re constantly hiking, exploring new cities, trying new foods, and now we’re learning Spanish!

6️⃣ Finnley has spent most of his life on the road. He’s 5 now, but we adopted him when he was 4 months old ❤️ Then we immediately jumped into a 6 month van life trip with him in our previous van. He loves life on the road and his favourite place to be is on the beach. 🏝️

⭐️ We’d love to hear about YOU! 👋 Give us a wave in the comments, and let us know if we have anything in common, or tell us something fun about you! 😁

OR let us know if there’s anything else you’d like to know about US or our journey? 😁 by @hayleyandjake

Goodbye Chile and hello Argentina! 🇨🇱➡️🇦🇷

We took a detour off the carretera austral to visit Futaleufú and check white water rafting off our bucket list! We spent the morning navigating our way through class IV and V rapids - and (surprisingly) walked away unharmed! 🤣

A turn in the weather forecast brought rain for the next week, and us to a pivotal point - do we continue driving north to complete the caretera austral, knowing we’d be stuck inside or outside hiking in the mud and rain? Or do we chase sunshine and go to try and spot hunting orcas?

We chose the latter.

So we crossed the border into Argentina, then drove 750km east to the Atlantic coast to the Valdez Peninsula where we camped with @back.to.the.routes and hung out with seals and sea lions watching for orcas 👀

Another fantastic week along the Carretera Austral! 🩵

We camped next to Gatorade blue lakes, kayaked to visit the marble caves, drove along some incredibly scenic roads, and spent time with our friends @back.to.the.routes

Photos from the Carretera Austral! 🏔️

We’re driving south to north along one of Chile’s most scenic routes. The ferry we took last week dropped us off in Puerto Yungay. From there, we started our journey north, visiting Caleta Tortel, Cochrane, and Patagonia National Park. We also reunited with our friends @back.to.the.routes 😁

Our third set of photos from a very busy week in Chilean Patagonia!

Since we booked a last minute trip to Antarctica, we had to be strategic about the route we took south in order to get to Ushuaia on time to board our cruise ship. That meant we had to postpone driving the famous Carretera Austral, a scenic route through Chilean Patagonia.

So now on our way north, we’re heading to the Carretera Austral! Only, there’s no roads on the Chilean side to take us north from Torres del Paine 😬

The solution? Get our van on a sold out ferry and turn it into a mini Patagonian cruise! 😆

Hiking in Torres del Paine National Park 🥾

What a stunning area in Chilean Patagonia. The park is filled with breathtaking views, and the hiking is top notch! We really enjoyed hiking on the trails and driving around to the viewpoints. It really is such a treat to be able to spend all day out enjoying nature. 🏔️🥾🌿

We’re noticing we hit a wall when we reach the 20km mark on these hikes in Patagonia. Our legs start aching and we’re ready to be instantly transported back to our tiny home on wheels 🤣 Does anyone else get this way too?

We’ve started our journey north!

We left Ushuaia, crossed back into Chile, then took the ferry across the straight of Magellan to leave Tierra del Fuego.

We visited Punta Arenas to explore town on a walking tour with @capitaldelapatagonia, then we continued north to Tierra del Fuego National Park to go search for PUMA!

Have you ever seen a wild puma before? 👀🐈

One more week at the end of the world 🥲

We got our van back from the mechanic ready to roll! 🥳🚐💨

But before we take on the remote roads of the cartera austral, we figured a little dirt road test run was a good idea. So we drove down ruta J, a gravel road that follows the Beagle Channel. There’s not much going on along this road, but the scenery is so beautiful, and the channel is full of whales, dolphins, and sea lions 🥰 When you reach the end of Ruta J, it is the southern most point you can reach by vehicle in the world

Our Week in Photos 🤍 02.02.08 - 02.02.15

We returned to Ushuaia and reunited with Finnley and the van! On our way south, we noticed a clunking sound coming from our axle. When we arrived to Ushuaia, we visited a Mechanic, who determined our ball joints needed replacing… the only problem was our van model (Ram Promaster) doesn’t exist in South America, and unfortunately the closest alternative (Fiat Decato) well they don’t use the same ball joints. So the mechanic found a machinist to repair our ball joints and get us back on the road😁👍

Our final excursion in Antarctica 🥲
Saying goodbye brought up so many emotions.

Gratitude for the opportunity to experience one of the few truly wild places left on our planet.

Joy from moments that felt almost unreal… penguins waddling past us, icebergs the size of buildings drifting by, kayaking with whales, and experiencing the kind of silence and remoteness you rarely find anywhere else.

Hope that places like this will continue to be protected for generations to come.

And a sense of responsibility to do our part to help protect Antarctica and the natural world.

We feel incredibly lucky to have experienced this place. What a way to cap off our journey south along the Pan-American Highway.

We arrived as tourists, but we’re leaving as ambassadors for this incredible place. We may be saying goodbye, but we’ll never stop talking about how amazing Antarctica is 🩵
