The Martin University Board of Trustees has announced the permanent closure of the University due to ongoing financial challenges and declining student enrollment, leading the Board to begin winding down operations and selling institutional assets. The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) expresses deep disappointment over the closure of Martin University, Indiana's only predominantly Black institution. HCF issues the following statement in response to the Board's decision to permanently close Martin University. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette recently highlighted the HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) concerns surrounding the recommendation to exclude additional state funding for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) for the FY28. The Gazette interviewed HCF President & CEO Demetrius Johnson, Jr., a UAPB alumnus, who emphasized that "state funding is particularly important to historically Black colleges and universities because of longstanding funding disparities." The recommendation by the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Committee would not eliminate UAPB's existing state funding, but would leave the university without additional allocation under the state's productivity-based formula. HCF remains committed to advocating for equitable investments that strengthen HBCUs. We will continue urging Arkansas leaders to ensure the state's HBCUs receives the resources necessary to support its students and advance its mission. by @hbcucampaign

Today, we pause to remember and celebrate the legacy of our dear friend, Mardell Denise Dilwroth. We will always reflect on Mardell’s life and her devoted loyalty to HBCUs and HCF. Her legacy will continue to leave an impact on our organization and will live on through the countless students she touched during her time at HCF. As well as the UAPB community and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The #HBCUCampaignFund (HCF) recognizes Dr. Paul A. Jones, president of Fort Valley State University (@fvsu_1895), as the second 2027 Dr. Lawrence A. Davis Jr. Trailblazer of Higher Education honoree, the highest distinction presented as part of The Ten Most Dominant HBCU Leaders Award & Class. HCF announced Dr. Jones selection in January 2026, following the official announcement of his retirement. The recognition celebrates his leadership, contributions to institutional advancement, and lasting impact on FVSU. "Dr. Jones tenure at FVSU has included academic expansion, campus improvement, and continued efforts to strengthen the institution for future generations. Today, we honor the life and legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer. Hamer's life was defined by courage, sacrifice, and a willingness to stand up for others. From voting rights and civic engagement to education, economic opportunity, and human dignity, she understood the true progress requires us to speak up and take action. Her legacy continues to challenge us to serve our communities, create opportunities for the next generation, and never remain silent when justice and equality are at stake. Dr. White’s appointment is historic as he becomes the first African American to serve as Chancellor of ASU.
