Production phase well underway at one of our Cheltenham projects. The house was already subject to some structural movement, so the new works required careful consideration. Works by @careconstruction #steelbeams #renovation #cotswolds by @hbstructuralengineers

Many walls opened up for our project in Evesham. The existing form was a long corridor of interconnected rooms and halls which was quite disjointed. We designed a scheme to open up and provide a cohesive functional floor plan. We had to deal with a patchwork of adapted masonry structure, and shallow corbelled foundations. Beautiful spaces begin with thoughtful design — and a clear understanding of how they will be built.

At HB Structural Engineers we bring architectural design and structural engineering together, considering the spaces, materials and supporting structure as the design develops.

From opening up an existing home to designing a new extension, this joined-up approach helps us coordinate the detail, resolve challenges early and create spaces that are practical, buildable and a pleasure to live in.

Creative thinking. Technical understanding. Attention to detail.

A considered foundation solution for one of our current projects at Loweswater Close, Cheltenham.

Following diligent trial pit investigations and an assessment of the surrounding trees and ground conditions, we developed a piled reinforced concrete ground beam scheme for the new extension.

The design has been developed not only around structural performance, but also with buildability firmly in mind — simplifying ground beam layouts, reinforcement details and pile positions wherever possible to provide a practical, robust solution for the contractor on site.

Careful consideration has also been given to the interface between the new, relatively stiff piled structure and the existing dwelling, with movement and separation details incorporated to help manage potential differential movement between old and new.

Good structural design is often as much about understanding the site and developing a straightforward construction strategy as it is about the calculations.

Finalised design and calcs for our Badgeworth project. Comprising complete refurbishment and extension of a dormer house. Some large spans for the glazing and open plan form. Also dealing with existing shallow foundations. #structural #foundations #steelwork #cotswolds by @hbstructuralengineers

Yet another Grade II Listed project. Terrible condition at the moment with some serious water damage! But a local developer has committed to getting it fully restored to its former glory. #heritagebuilding #listedbuilding #structural #architecture #cotswolds by @hbstructuralengineers

Working with historic and listed buildings is rarely straightforward. Behind the character and craftsmanship are often decades — or centuries — of movement, moisture ingress, hidden alterations and deteriorated structural fabric.
Structural engineering in these buildings is as much about understanding history as it is about calculations.
One of the biggest challenges is balancing structural safety with conservation principles. The aim is rarely to simply replace elements with new steel or concrete. Instead, the focus is often on a “repair not replace” approach — retaining as much original fabric as possible whilst sensitively strengthening and stabilising the structure.
This can involve:
• Assessing rotten or decayed timber members and determining what can realistically be repaired
• Introducing discreet strengthening works that respect the historic character
• Designing around irregular geometry and unknown construction methods
• Minimising interventions to preserve significance and authenticity
• Coordinating with conservation officers, heritage consultants and contractors to achieve workable solutions
Historic buildings also demand careful investigation. Opening-up works frequently reveal surprises: hidden beams, undocumented alterations, unsupported masonry, moisture damage or structural movement concealed behind finishes.
Every intervention needs thought, collaboration and restraint.
Done well, structural engineering should quietly support the continued life of the building — allowing historic fabric and craftsmanship to remain visible for future generations rather than being unnecessarily replaced.

Excited to be working on a new commercial project involving this beautiful Grade II listed building in Cheltenham.
Projects like this are always about balance — respecting the character, craftsmanship, and history of the original structure, while carefully introducing interventions that allow the building to function for modern commercial use. From detailed surveys through to design and coordination, every decision is shaped by both conservation principles and practical performance. #structuralengineering #gradeiilisted #architecture by @hbstructuralengineers

At Hoch Bau, we deliver structural engineering through a BIM-led workflow, not just 2D calculations.
That means:
• A coordinated 3D model — not separate plans, sections and details
• Structural elements integrated with the wider design from day one
• Early clash detection — reducing surprises on site
• Real-time updates — one change updates everything
• Clear visual communication for clients, contractors and Building Control
• Better decisions — with quantities, costs and buildability considered early
For residential projects especially, this “micro-BIM” approach brings the benefits of large-scale coordination into smaller, more cost-sensitive schemes.
Less ambiguity. Better coordination. Smarter construction.
If you’re planning an extension, renovation or new build — structure should never be an afterthought.
