Show opening tonight at Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts 8/22 - 10/18 Cosmo, 2026, monoprint, oil, cosmos, teak leaves, 31”x 21” July 31st I’ve spent the last year gathering plants and flowers from places around the country I have a deep familial connection to. I’ve collected botanicals from places like St. Augustine Florida where family has gathered for five generations, or Pittsburgh Pa while visiting the gardens I grew up in that were tended by my father and grandmother. Last summer I gathered flowers from friends with beautiful gardens in Vermont where I have lived for the past thirty three years. I wasn’t sure why I was doing it, but I kept gathering, pressing, printing and painting these botanical memorials. I used to think that if I didn’t get into the studio to make art on a regular basis I was somehow a lesser artist. I don’t feel that way anymore. For me, the creative process is not that proscribed. I have periods of time when I am making, and periods of time that I am gestating. This gestating can be gathering ideas and materials or just being receptive. Things may be happening under the surface that I’m not aware of but I’m trying to hold space for. This print is part of a body of work in process. I picked these Cosmos flowers last summer in my friend Rita’s garden. My Mother Passed away this summer on July 31st. The prints from this series are dedicated to Hannah Greenfield as she embraces the Cosmos. by @helen.m.schmidt

Join us for the opening of Rick Harlow’s show at the Currier Center this Friday. For the last forty years Rick Harlow has balanced his time between frequent trips to Colombia to work with indigenous communities, and his career as an exhibiting artist. Rick has lived and worked with the indigenous peoples of Colombia in support of the preservation and continuance of their traditional practices. In this body of work Harlow splatters tiny droplets of paint onto a canvas, and the interaction of the colors he chooses makes them appear to vibrate, expressing the reality that everything is alive as many indigenous cultures of the world have known and celebrated by @helen.m.schmidt
