Just returning home from a wonderful stay at Crafted at Powdermills @staycrafted_ . My photos do not do this place justice. Set in a delightful Georgian house, the whole philosophy of the hotel is rooted in celebrating local skilled workmanship, local artists, craftspeople and local produce. It is friendly, relaxing and stunningly beautiful, packed, as it is, full of crafted furniture, textiles and art. Enough to make my mouth water! This weekend they are hosting their first ever Maker’s Market, with around 40 different, highly talented makers. There was a panel discussion which was led by Natalie Melton, director of the Crafts Council @craftscouncil . She was joined by artist Euan Roberts @euanrobertsart , Susie Rohan-Willner, CEO of Toast @toast_clothing.co.uk and Sophie Selu @grainandknot . It was wonderful to hear them talk about the importance of craft in their lives and how respect for their materials and resources informs what they do. If you can get there over this weekend, I strongly urge you to do so. Many thanks to the Crafts Council for selecting me as a competition winner. The prize included a superb private dinner where I met other lucky winners, Natalie Melton and other Crafts Council staff, Susie Rohan-Willner and Chris King, CEO and founder of Crafted at Powdermills. An incredibly inspiring group of people! by @helen_long_ceramics
Martin and I were lucky enough to witness the total eclipse from León in Northern Spain. It was spectacular; it was magical and it was truly awesome! #totaleclipse by @helen_long_ceramics
Layered clay, light and meaning—Helen Long’s (@helen_long_ceramics) work transforms the vessel into a powerful symbol. Working across ceramics, sculpture and traditional crafts, she hand-builds porcelain forms that explore themes of fragility, resilience and connection. Using the intricate Nerikomi technique, she creates harmonious patterns through layered coloured clays, reflecting the beauty of human relationships. Her thoughtful, sustainable practice adds depth to work that is both delicate and enduring. Please note that some images may have been cropped for format. So excited about next Saturday, 18th July! @city_artsnewbury is hosting a Graffiti Day. It is being held @growing2gethernewbury . Cottismore Park Newbury Road. RG20 4SY. I’ll be there, trying to help out and not get in the way.😃 #cityartsnewbury #streetarteverywere by @helen_long_ceramics
Yesterday was the final session of Charlotte Adcock’s linoprinting course at Newbury City Arts. Has it made me an expert? Of course not! But I’ve learned so much and had a lot of fun. I’ve also got the bug! Huge thanks to @charlotteadcockdesigns and @city_artsnewbury . #linocutprint #communityarts #cityartsnewbury by @helen_long_ceramics
I’ve just rescued this gorgeous Scarlet Tiger moth from the pond! He hung around for a couple of minutes and I have just seen him fly away! by @helen_long_ceramics
I seem to have become obsessed with these beautiful Opium Poppies which have seeded themselves in my flower beds. I love the contrast between their rich, regal purple, paper-thin petals and the tightly packed head of the “Hills of Snow” hydrangeas. @englishgardens @sketchbooks by @helen_long_ceramics
This is the progress, so far, with the linoprint course. @city_artsnewbury are so amazing with the range of courses they offer with professional artists sharing their skills. Thanks to @charlotteadcockdesigns for her patience and encouragement. The reduction print echinacea is not finished yet; 2 more layers to go! I had to add the colour test sheet for the tulip colour palette. Loving the textures! @city_artsnewbury #linocutprint #newskills by @helen_long_ceramics
Too hot to go into my studio today. It’s a bit better, sitting in the shade in the garden. I tried sketching with India Ink , pencil and waterproof fine liner pen. Such fun! I’m doing a wonderful Lino printing course @city_artsnewbury , run by the incomparable @charlotteadcockdesigns . I’ve be focusing on flowers, so these are inspiration sketches which just might make the cut ( sorry about the pun!) I’ll share some images of the works in progress in another post. #cityartsnewbury #wildflowersketching #doingwhatilove❤️ by @helen_long_ceramics
Spotted this gorgeous Painted Lady in the garden today. She’s had a long trip- she will have started off in North Africa! by @helen_long_ceramics
This is our final day of Open Studios @oswbnh . I think our Chapel has got to be one of the coolest ( temperature wise at least!) spots in town! Beautiful oils by Kate Steele; sumptuous watercolours and prints by @isacarmona_art and delicate porcelain work by me! Pop down to say Hello x #oswbnh2026 #buylocal by @helen_long_ceramics
Our beautiful chapel is a cool treat. Come and stay as long as you like! We are open today until 5pm and all day tomorrow. @oswbnh #oswbnh2026 #buylocalart #artistsatthechapel2026 by @helen_long_ceramics
