🌍 My ENGin Programme Experience @enginprogram

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to take part in the ENGin Programme! 💙💛

This experience has been about much more than just improving my English. One of the most valuable parts of the programme has been the opportunity to connect with people from another culture, learn about their traditions, lifestyle and way of thinking, and share my own Ukrainian culture with them. 🇺🇦🌎

Thank you to everyone who makes this programme possible and to my conversation partner, Emediong, for the interesting conversations, support and inspiration! ❤️ @hermiejay

ENGin is a wonderful opportunity to learn, communicate, discover new cultures and grow together. ✨

I get so excited speaking ibibio with strangers!!!

Something profound happened today, you know when you have been far away from home too long and hear people speak your indigenous language in a foreign space.

The joy and sense of identity it brings is indescribable, and conversation can move from 1-100 in split seconds including service delivery.

I was at an office, while waiting for my lady at the counter to finish attending to me, she went into an inner office to finalize their internal procedure.

A middle aged man somewhat in his late 50s walked in and asked in our local dialect “Anie owo iba mmi”? I turned and responded “Owo ibaha o”. He smiled at me and continued conversation that led to series of laughter.

Shortly afterwards, the lady came in they exchanged pleasantries like acquaintances, and I was asked what the “J” in my name signified while we spoke and laughed about it. Where I gave him a back story of the name and why it isn't Jeremiah that people largely likened it to be. He totally agreed with me and asked adiaha or nwa Jerry?

I responded Adiaha Jerry o, he cheerfully said Akukim Erong (Ram Ritual for first daughter's) then added, he is currently writing marriage list for his first daughter, whenever he remembers what he needs he writes it down.

All of us laughed and I asked “hope you are not planning on adding Keke and an entire solar system in your list” he laughed and said ah 12 panels solars. Everyone just laughed telling him not to try it before it discourages the young man from marrying, we ended the conversation with jovially and parted ways.

This just shows how much one thing as significant as language can pull solidarity.

Unfortunately my people speak more English back home that it vexes my mind.

You know that thing where you take amazing pictures of your colleagues every single time, but somehow struggle to get one decent photo of yourself? 😮‍💨

Please tell me I’m not alone!!!!

I’ll take over 30 pictures just to manage 3 usable ones.

But I’ve turned it into a learning curve for the team. Sometimes we overlook the fact that real growth means having a fair knowledge of every department and unit, especially if you aspire to grow in your field.

P:S added sample photos🤣, I love them regardless by @english_teacher.olha

Since the beginning of 2026, we have intensified creating awareness on the importance of skills, through our weekly radio program. The opportunity given by the government is so juicy and we can't continue to be hush about it.

Join the conversation every Wednesday and Friday 4:00pm - 4:30pm on Democracy Radio 104.9FM.

We have 4 more episodes to go!!!

Imagine going through approved Skills Training Centers, Vocational Enterprise Institute (VEI) Or any of the Federal Technical Colleges (Enrollment for technical college is still ongoing till June) to enroll, gain a skill and be certified with the National Skills Qualifications (NSQ).

To your surprise it's recognized nationally and internationally, would you still sleep on this opportunity?

By skills, it is not limited to informal skills in construction, Building, fashion and Beauty etc. It is across Information Technology, Cinematography, photography,Social media management etc.

This National Skills Qualifications Framework is here to formalise the informal sector, if you are already a skilled person and wondering how it would benefit you, there is a pathway Called Recognition of Prior Learning (i.e you learnt through internships, self taught, volunteering, years of service etc).

You're eligible for the above, just go to any approved Skills Training Center (STC) in your state or city, a form would be given to you and your journey of assessment begins.

Another week of sharing a country with people who genuinely think working in the nonprofit or development space is just volunteering 🙃

Especially when you’re in communities during implementation phases.

It really shows how little effort people make to understand the sector, or even bother to learn.

If you want a full-time role in this space, volunteer like your life depends on it. The skills required here are not taught in regular schools, they are learned on the job, by showing up, doing the work, and staying consistent.

And regardless, the work is deeply fulfilling. The impact is real, and the satisfaction you get from it is unmatched.
