It’s not enough to be pretty- a mini essay by Alani J.

Why do I want model? I ask myself that often. Is it to prove that I’m pretty? I once received over 4000 photos from a singular photo shoot and upon reaching the midway point, I thought “what am I going to do with all these”? Nothing. And eventually I’ll take new pictures and these will also sit idly on my phone or on my Instagram and then I’ll compare myself to every woman I see online.

In times of extreme self doubt, I’ll say to myself “ I’m really not a model. I’m really not made out for this.” Or “I’m not pretty enough” but it was never about being pretty enough. It was about being loved. Often times, we believe that attractiveness with will aid in fulfillment of that desire. I have to remind myself “The Lord doesn’t want me to compare myself” He doesn’t want me to think condemningly about the work his hand created. I am fearfully and wonderfully made, I am loved and I wasn’t made merely aesthetic purposes, I was created to create. In these truths are the essence of my being.

I am thankful that the Lord has crafted many of my brothers and sisters so magnificently that some of can pursue and obtain successful modeling careers. Truthfully, I don’t want to just model. In the depth of my core, I wanna tell stories. Can I tell stories through modeling? Yes I can, but there is a longing in me, an aching, an ardent desire to storytell, through all its mediums and disciplines.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting to be pretty, desiring a romantic relationship or with modeling but when we make an idol out of them that’s when we must adjust our heart postures. Recently I believe the Lord spoke this to me “You are not using your Instagram to be influential. My people know that you’re pretty but do they know of me?” It was convicting. So in this age where aesthetics are praised over essences, will you join me in using everything the Lord has given you (including your beauty) to influence a generation to worship him in spirit and truth? Because it is not enough to just be pretty.

Silo taught me a lot, about my craft, about the vision for my artistry, about the power of divine timing and about the empowerment of creative collaborations. Thankful for the experience and all it opened my eyes to. I want my body of work to be meaningful, more than beautiful pictures that lay dormant on the page of social media. I want my body of work to be art. Art that opens blinded eyes and pierces hardened hearts. In the words of Philip Anthony Michell
"We are not building brands, but the Kingdom" in my case, I seek not to bolster my portfolio or padden your fyp with images of myself, but to glorify God in the only way I know how, in word and in deed, through my art, by the way I love, and the witness which I proclaim his truth.

It's time to work to reflect and release that vision. Here's to alignment, here's to art for arts sake, and here's to creating bodies of work that explores creativity as an essential, deeply spiritual and theological practice.

Each day, upon waking, I count my many blessings and I cannot help but thank God for color, especially for the color green. I’m beginning to think he made it, especially for my skin✨

The official trailer for Another Number is here.

This is the first real look into the world we’ve been building, the characters, the pressure, the choices, and everything that comes with trying to become more than what people expect you to be.

Getting to this point has taken a lot. A lot of time, sacrifice, planning, late nights, long shoots, and belief in something that started with just an idea.

To the cast, crew, locations, and everyone who has helped bring Another Number this far, thank you. This moment does not happen without all of you.

Watch the trailer. Share it. Comment. Let us know what you think.

⁨My God, the soul that you have given me is pure. You created it, You formed it, You breathed it into me and You preserve it within me. You will one day take it from me, and restore it in me in the time to come. When I Consider The Roses | Poem By Alani Kaleilia J. “The Beloved Daughter of God” @hernameisbeloved

When I consider the roses,
and how the wilderness
rejoices as if it were
a blossoming bush
and how they neither
strive nor toil
I am reminded of its color
as scarlet as the blood
so beautifully shed by Christ
whilst he took on the sins of the world
When I consider the roses,
Oh how I am reminded
of the divine sacrifice
and sacred romance
between My Lord and I.
When I consider the roses,
I reminisce on how it too
wears a crown of thorns
like the Savior amidst the work of the cross.
When I consider the roses,
Oh how am I to not reminisce
On this ever blooming glory of Christ
made manifest? by @hernameisbeloved
