“The Bog Beings” have emerged from the moors and the moss, and journeyed down from the hills to Gibson Mill in the heart of Hardcastle Crags…

Here’s some snippets of the making of this series, inspired by the moorland plant community and restoration work, for the @peat_appreciation_society exhibition at Gibson Mill💚

We are an artist collective, inspired by the wonders of the bogs, the mystery of the moorlands and the peat-making power of Sphagnum moss.

The exhibition opening is Saturday 11-1 pm. Come and appreciate peat with us! The Bog Beings are waiting👀🌿💚

“O bosque não se vende, se ama e se defende”
“The forest is not for sale, it is to be loved and protected”

This is the Curupira. He is the forest guardian of Brazilian folklore who protects the rainforests from harm, roaming his territory and warding off poachers.

In the 16th century, when the Portuguese arrived to colonise Brazil, a Jesuit priest, José de Anchieta, described a “certain demon” who was feared by indigenous peoples and often punished or even killed those who entered the forest.

This demon was known as the Curupira, a name derived from the Tupi-Guarani language (“kuru’pir” which means “covered in blisters,”) because of his fiery and mysterious nature.

His supernatural abilities thwart the efforts of those who disregard the connection with the natural world. Known for his bright red hair, which bursts into flames when he is angered or threatened, and his backwards-facing feet, leaving footprints which fool those who chase him.

He inhabits the native rainforests of Brazil; the Amazon and, the lesser-known but equally important, Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Rainforest). So, he reminds those who dare venture into his forest domains to beware of their intentions.

This week it’s the Michaelmas Daisy (Aster / Symphyotrichum spp.), whose beautiful late-blooms produce starbursts of goodness for the pollinators in autumn, and symbolises protection for the dark days ahead ⭐️✨

There’s also some notes from the weekend at @milltown_arts and some other updates on upcoming work!

Feeling grateful, inspired and looking forward to the views where the winds are taking me, for now, just keep sailing💨⛵️

This week it’s the Beech - the Common or European ones us Brits know and love (Fagus sylvatica),and the wonderful genus of Southern Beeches (Nothofagus) which grow in the southern hemisphere 💚

Here’s a story of bumping into a Southern Beech unexpectedly at Newby Hall during Harrogate Flower Show. When I saw those crinkly, wavy-toothed (crenate) leaves and the tiiiny beech nuts I just knew in my bones it was a Nothofagus. I just love these trees!

Go have a read of some cool facts I learnt about them in my field notes 📒🎨

Thanks @nico.lavandero for your expert ID skills ⭐️✨
